Pont-du-Gard by @Phinomet

Love this latest doodlewash by Philippe (@Phinomet)! The colors are amazing and it looks even better in person. We’d have you all over for dinner to see it, but many of you are in other cities, so this will have to suffice. This is of the Pont du Gard, which is an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge that crosses the Gardon River in southern France.

After the collapse of the Roman Empire and the aqueduct’s fall into disuse, the Pont du Gard remained largely intact, due to the importance of its secondary function, a toll bridge. Local lords and bishops were responsible for its upkeep, in exchange for the right to levy tolls on travelers who used it to cross the river. Today, it’s a top tourist spot where for years it has attracted the attention of writers and artists alike.
