Written by Of all the various types of flying insects that make an appearance here when the weather gets warmer, dragonflies are my favorite. They’re so fascinating to watch as they zoom by and hover in mid-air as though simply floating. I’ve heard that if one actually lands on your head, it’s considered a sign of good luck. But, in truth, that would simply freak me out and I would probably run screaming like a baby. I’m not sure if the luck still works if that’s your reaction to it, but I know that would be mine. If nothing else, having them nearby is definitely lucky in that they eat mosquitoes, which I despise. I often saw them when visiting nearby lakes, but I’m always thrilled to see the one that buzzes around the parking lot where I work. There may be more than one, of course, but I only see one at a time so it’s like a little friend who drops by for a visit. It’s odd to see a dragonfly right in the middle of a city like that, but this little guy is always zooming around, adding a little natural interest to an urban jungle. It’s rather comforting.
I’ve been zooming around myself lately and I feel like I’m horribly behind with everything I need to do next. But, somehow, things always have a way of coming together beautifully so I’m not worried at all. World Watercolor Month begins in just a few days and I hope everyone reading this will participate! It’s so simple as all you have to do is simply add the hashtag #WorldWatercolorMonth to every watercolor you post in July. That’s it! And what’s more, I have LOTS of amazing things to give away this year thanks to our incredible sponsors, so please drop by each day to read my little rambles. Beyond the normal giveaways, I’ll have lots of free samples of awesome art supplies for folks to try simply by being the first to comment on these posts! If you have actually visited my site, you’ll notice there’s a countdown to the big day. It’s set to New Zealand time as those artists as well as our friends in Australia usually kick things off for us. In fact, since I post in the evening Midwest American time, I’m usually one of the last to jump in! That’s so fun, because Doodlewash has never been about little old me, but always about all of you. And I know I keep mentioning it, but if you haven’t logged into Doodlewash and joined the Club, then you should give it a go! You can upload your own artwork into a gallery, participate in forum discussions about watercolor, join groups created by our members, and set your location so eventually you’ll be able to find other artists in your area and truly connect! This has been my dream all along and it’s so exciting to see all the features coming into place to finally make it happy. When I started this art journey I felt so alone, and I’ve spent the last two short years feverishly trying to bring our community together. I’m now surrounded by incredible artists I’m proud to call my friends. Happily painting with others and no longer feeling all alone in this journey, like a dragonfly on a leaf.

Love dragonflies especially because their diaphanous wings. They are impossible yet they exist. Your green one is a gorgeous critter.

Fantastic dragonfly, Charlie! I really like seeing them, too, except they kinda freak me out a bit. My mother told me that when she was young she was told they would sew your mouth shut if you got to close. What????!!! And when I lived in Asia, a Japanese guy told me that when he was young they would tie strings to dragonflies, like helium balloons. Not sure about that story…… ( :
