Today is Halloween, so I hope it’s a happy one for anyone celebrating! And it’s also the end of this month’s Doodlewash challenge along with Inktober. I’ve inked and splashed my way through all 31 days as always and it was a blast! I hope all of you participating had a fabulous time as well and will join us for our November Art Challenge which is up next! As a kid, of course, I’d be heading out in costume right now, going door to door begging for candy, but as an adult without kids, I’ll be staying home tonight. We don’t actually get any trick or treaters in our neighborhood, so we don’t have any candy ready and waiting. To be on the safe side, we’ve simply shuttered our porch light, on the off chance someone decides to pop by and be utterly disappointed. We considered having some candy ready, just in case, but that would mean way too much leftover candy that Philippe and I would inevitably end up eating, so it’s really best this way. I miss answering the door and doling out candy though, as I adore seeing all of the creativity in the costumes and love seeing the smiles on the faces of kids, that aren’t wearing masks.

As our little city continues to grow, so does the chance that there may finally be more city dwellers with children. So, in the future, we might just have to keep our candy jars fuller. I chose M&M’s for this post because those little packs of them were always my favorite. It’s both a candy and a chocolate so it’s really the best of all worlds. And unlike the mini candy bars which disappeared nearly instantly, when you opened a little pack of M&M’s, it lasted for a little longer. At least when I at them. I used them as a way of prolonging the joy and triumph of an evening collecting treats. Nibbling on them one by one. When I mentioned to Philippe that our doorbell did ring once last year, he looked around and suggested a banana. I was aghast! I still remember that house on the block when I was a kid. The one doling out “healthy treats” such as apples, naked and without caramel, and those houses were on every kid’s blacklist. We would whisper to each other in the dark as we passed in the night, hurriedly pointing out which houses to strictly avoid, and triumphantly describing the houses with the best treats.

I still remember that year when I was finally deemed “too old” to go out trick or treating. Being the youngest, I didn’t have an age appropriate sibling to accompany as an excuse. It was like a little piece of my childhood died that day. I was left with only the memories. And since I’ve not had kids of my own, that day, was indeed, the last day for such silly and fun traditions. Yet, each time Halloween night comes around, I still think back to those memories. I loved choosing a costume for that year and then conspiring with my very talented mother, who would help me assemble and create it. And I loved that candy that I managed to procure and slowly eat over the next several days after the event. In truth, I just ate all of the really good stuff immediately and then sort of chewed through the rest to not be wasteful. It was a wondrous time and though I’m too old to participate in reality, I can still take a mental journey back in time. In my mind, I’m Little Charlie once again, wearing a costume that I’m infinitely proud to show off, and practically skipping door to door with glee, excited each and every time, to simply enjoy a little treat.

  1. If you’re worried about a stray tricker or treater being disappointed, keep a roll of quarters handy. Probably cheaper than candy. Also fewer calories and no cavities.

  2. I love your colorful M&Ms! I think they’re the best candy to paint just because of the colors! My best Halloween ever was when I went trick or treating with my teen-age nieces and their friends, when I was 23. There had been problems in the neighborhood with some older kids hassling younger ones, so the high schools had kids go out to keep an eye out for it. We did some awesome makeup, and the people loved it.

    1. Thanks so much, Sandra! 😃💕 Yeah, the colors make them super fun to paint… the detail is a little overwhelming in all the little bits though! hehe And aww… I love that story! Sound like a wonderful solution, and a perfect way for a child at heart in their 20’s to head back out and enjoy Halloween again properly! 😉

  3. The M & M’s look scrumptious. I’m glad you found an excuse to paint glass
because I know you love doing that…a mighty fine job I might add. A belated
Happy Halloween to you and yours.

  4. This is a cute story. I love the M&M jar with all the colors. Great choice for treats. There were quite a few kids at my door. I handed out pencils with a little bag of Welches gummies attached and had some packaged cookies for the babies. It was a fun evening. I was surprised how many kids were happy to get a pencil this year. It’s something I have done for a few years with each year a different treat attached. Maybe some are little “sketchers.”
