When it comes to our prompt of “perspective” for today, I thought about drawing a building or something at a particularly odd angle, but ended up with a bit more glass instead. It really could have been anything at all for this one as there are a million possibilities. In this case, I chose a single glass with just a bit of water. A glass that could be half full or half empty depending on how one prefers to think about things. For me, no matter what crazy or stressful things are happening in this world, I always see a glass like this as half full. A more positive way to view something that’s not quite at its best, but still has a bit of potential. I wasn’t always this optimistic about life. In my youth, I would often grow very cross when things didn’t go my way. But, with age, comes ages of experience that remind me there’s very few things in life that are so terribly important. Health, family and friends top the list and everything else, while certainly of note, simply doesn’t matter quite as much. While I’m not a fan of the new wrinkles that tend to randomly appear daily on my face these days, I’m very happy with the wisdom each one brings.

Today, Philippe and I visited the eye doctor and we were both pleased to learn that everything looked just fine. He had no changes to his prescription and even the pressure in his eyes had improved dramatically. For my part, everything was equally good on the health front, but I was told my eyesight is changing a bit. They said that I would be a “good candidate” for a “new technology” that “boosts the vision in the bottom half of my lenses slightly.” This is apparently what they tell you these days instead of simply using the word “bifocals.” Simply saying that awful word is apparently, these days, a glass half empty approach to things, so they use way too many words to get to the same point. I was then shown a chart of products of various versions of this wondrous “new technology” as the optician happily pointed out that I only needed the top row at this time. On this row was a photo of a hip, younger gentleman who had his glasses off and nearly sobbing while looking at a computer in one photo while studiously wearing them and typing away confidently in the second.

What I found comical was that they were really trying to take my hand and walk me through this miraculous change as though they had just discovered I was pregnant. I miracle to be sure. I realized that part of the issue was that I had indeed expressed hesitation, but that’s only because I needed to know I could buy my frames elsewhere. Their available frames all look like they were designed in the 80’s by people who forgot to wear their glasses while doing so and lack any sense of style. I was finally able to relay to the guy at the front that I simply wanted to purchase frames somewhere else and asked if that would be an option. His demeanor changed immediately, he stopped tiptoeing about and cooing as his talked and said, “Oh, yeah, sure.” In truth, I don’t care that I’m going to need bifocals and couldn’t quite make out what all the fuss was about. My glasses would simply be half full. Nothing to worry or fret over. Change isn’t some “new technology,” it’s something that happens to us every day. How we choose to deal with it, well, that’s simply a matter of perspective.

  1. I love the perspective of both your painting and your ramble! It made me think a bit of the time management analogy where the fellow pours rocks into a glass and asks people if it is full. They say yes because there are rocks all the way to the top. So then he pulls out a box of sand and pours it into the glass, showing how much empty space there was. He repeats his questions, and people say yes again. Then he pours water into the glass … People often think they are full to the brim and have no room for change (and would indeed weep to learn they need bifocals). They miss out on so much. Hear’s to rocks, sand, water and perspective!

  2. Ah yes, the dreaded bifocals. I’ve had them for quite a while. Shrug!

I am such an optimist that a friend in college avoided me when he was having a bad day because I was too cheerful. Ha! To that I say don’t worry, be happy. When I wrote don’t worry, be … The computer popped up be careful. That just pleases me so much.

Speaking of half a glass of milk. I need some cookies to go with it. Or brownies! That would hit the spot!

  3. You know, they do make contacts that are bifocals. I am waiting for my next eye appt to ask about them. I hate having “readers”. They are never where you need them…..ever. We deal with what we are dealt and go along our merry way. Did you do another glass to keep pushing me towards doing one? ;P It’s pretty cool by the way!

    absolutely!

  5. Charlie what an encouraging post. I am toxic to negative people. I see so much potential and aim to view life as as positive as possible, why not? Ageing has me teetering from “crap!” to “oh well, embrace it girl!” Your story had me chuckling, things got real when you didn’t want no stinking ’80s style! Haha! Keep looking up Charlie until you need those bifocals! Oh, wait until you need trifocals…Then your perspective will open up even further 😉

    1. hehe! Thanks, Margaret! 😃💕 Yeah, I was assured I’m only at the beginning of the “focal” journey! lol And sure, surgery would likely take care of it all in one pass, but it’s terrifying. Instead I’ll rock the “latest style” in whatever lens they impose upon me!!

  6. Welcome to our world of bifocals. I have to get my bifocal soon. Somehow I am able to manage my work using two glases – one for the reading and another for distance. Liked your doodlewash and use of turquoise.
