Written by Today’s prompt of “shiny” is definitely something that I love to do quite often in my watercolor sketches. But I realized that I have never really attempted to combine my other favorite subject of food. There aren’t a lot of truly reflective foods, but I happened to stumble across a mirror cake and decided to give it a go. I’ve never had one of these as it takes a lot of ingredients I tend to avoid to get food to shine like this, but they are rather interesting. So showy and over the top, like a cake in full drag. It’s truly impressive. I’ve no idea if these cakes actually taste good, but they have that look about them that seems to say, “I don’t really care if you like me. I’m too fabulous for you anyway.” A cake with confidence and touch of panache, which I simply have to appreciate. And since dessert is usually the finale of any great meal, perhaps a little extra flair is the perfect way to end the show.
As ever, I feel like I’ve painted myself into a corner again with this post as what the hell does somebody say about shiny cake. But, I’ll just keep rambling on as usual to see what comes out. I guess in thinking about this one, it’s the idea of confidence that strikes me. I’m a generally confident person, but tend to prefer standing off to the side rather than being the center of attention. Even on my blog, I’m just a member of a cast of hundreds of artists, coming in to share my little offerings in between their posts. I still struggle with wondering if I’m good enough to actually be an illustrator for anything important. Anything that might actually get published or printed. I think these little pangs of self doubt plague many of us who decide to pick up a brush or a pen. We’re wrong, of course. We are each amazing in our own unique way, but trying to truly believe that is often a bit of a challenge.
I say that we just stand up and strut our stuff! I mean if a dessert can do full drag, then what’s to stop any of us from doing what we love? The one thing I’ve found in these last couple years of sketching and blogging is that every artist has an audience. It doesn’t matter if the group is large or small. What matters is always putting your best forward and enjoying your own show. Much of time, I have a blast making my little posts, but realize some are far better than others. Some are pretty weak and then there’s that one day when something sort of awesome pops out. Those are the days that keep me going and give me the confidence to move to the next. I’ll hopefully have years of these tiny performances ahead of me and someone, somewhere is always bound to enjoy them. That’s all I need to believe in myself and all I need to know to believe in everyone reading this. We’re all amazing and we make the world a little more fabulous with our creativity each and every day. We may not always be the main course, but if we make the effot, we’ll definitely always be like a shiny dessert!

Cake cake and shiny purple at that! Probably a fondant icing, which I don’t understand how to make at all, but I think is a kind of candy coating that can be made in any color. I think fondant is the icing used on petit fours but I admit to no ability to make them, only to eat them. Food in drag, food in a bag, food to snag, if it’s dessert makes me glad. I would love to know what purple clad cake tastes like. Yum.
Thanks so much, Sharon! 😃💕 hehe… I have to admit to doing a bit of cake decorating with this one. The reference was chocolate, but I didn’t want to paint something brown. Though this color does exist… hehe… as does blue, which is weird because blue food doesn’t really exist outside of cake. I’m not a huge fan of eating icing like this, but it looks sooooo pretty!!

Your posts are as much practice using words and written language as practice using watercolors and visual language. The more you do it, the better you get. Yet even the best have failures. There is a saying something to the effect that if you’re not failing, you’re not pushing your limits enough.
Keep at it, we enjoy getting to know you, mistakes, gems and everything in between. And watching you do it, encourages others, well, at least me, to get out and do it.
Importance is a relative term. A blog is a type of publication, and you do have an audience. You’d be missed if you stopped posting. That is one success.

I might have a doodlewash that feels inspiring and actually turned out well only to have a bit of writer’s block! hehe… the best days are when the two come together perfectly, but those don’t happen every day. Still, I enjoy this style of art journaling… I prefer to type… I can’t even read my own writing on paper. 😊

A very Royal regal looking cake, opulence that I am afraid would not last in my house…eaten before the hassle of getting that shine! I believe it’s quite hard to achieve that look, so eating it would be easier…yum!

I’ve never seen or had mirror cake. Now I’m curious, but will resist since tasty or not, it isn’t on the diet. You mention in this post that you are only one of a cast of hundreds on this site, but you definitely stand out, Charlie. The number of posts increase around the time you usually post because people are coming to see what you’ve done for the day. You inspire all of us, and even when you aren’t active on the community, your presence is there.
