Welcome to November and the start of another doodlewash adventure. First, I’m trying to get over my fear of drawing people and second, it’s National Author’s Day. This is supposed to be a doodlewash of my favorite author, Oscar Wilde, but I’m not sure I got the likeness right. To me he looks more like John Travolta playing Oscar Wilde, which is something I can’t even wrap my head around.
So what’s the tour for November? Well, I had no idea when I woke up this morning, but stumbled across a National Day Calendar and decided I would spend November doodlewashing and telling stories inspired by whatever day pops up. It’s been fun to both write a bit as well as doodlewash, so I was happy the first one was Author’s Day. And Oscar Wilde is hands down my favorite.
He came to mind recently when Philippe and I skipped a fancy anniversary dinner last night in order to go clothes shopping instead. We chose Marshall’s because paying full price for anything makes Philippe break out in hives. I had neglected to shave my face for a few days and when I looked in the mirror while trying on a sweater I was appalled.
I know beards are in, but mine comes in with so much white that each day I let it lapse is another year added to my age. I had nearly let it go a week so I had a perfectly terrifying Dorian Gray moment when I looked in the mirror at the store. Oscar Wilde suddenly leaped into my head saying, “To get back my youth I would do anything in the world, except take up exercise, get up early, or be respectable.” So I just shaved when I got home and everything was fine.
This will be the shortest post ever since I don’t want to be divorced and it’s still my anniversary. So stay tuned as we officially begin this ludicrous journey tomorrow. Oh, by the way, for this tour, I switched to a new larger Moleskine that’s 5 x 8.25″ for no particular reason other than to mix things up. That’s it for now, and yes, I do realize that Oscar Wilde had the best line this time, but as he says, “Quotation is a serviceable substitute for wit.”

I think your Wilde is wonderful! It is so hard to do a portrait, unless you are Teresa or Jenny.. 😊 I’ve always liked that photo of Wilde. I have so many Oscar Wilde quotes I want to use in my art journal. The one that I have used is “To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.”
I think it’s great that you’re going to teach us all about National “—” Day every day! ❤️
Thanks Kari! ❤️😃Yeah…I’m no Jenny or Teresa! Hehe…they’re so awesome!! Oscar Wilde quotes are so good… He was amazing. And we’ll see how this new project goes. I actually have about 4-5 things to choose from each day, so not sure what we’ll be celebrating yet! Lol 😉
Wow! Awesome portrait Charlie! I do see a little John Tavolta in him… But that’s probably my poor eyesight. Lol! My husband seems to forget he is going gray until he sees a photo of himself. Kind of like how I feel when I stand on the weight scale. Life has a way that ages us that I do not really like! 😳⚡️😳
I know!! This aging things needs to stop immediately!! 😳 Thanks so much Jill! ❤️😃Glad you liked this…I’m no portrait artist…I still prefer animals. Lol
DO NOT even freakin’ tell me you are afraid of drawing people when this is the result!!! SO flippin’ amazing! I won’t keep you since you need to be anniversarying! But HOLY SCHMOLY! This is one of your most amazing pieces! Gotta love his quote too! hehe!
Awww thanks Jodi!! ❤️😃That’s so sweet of you to say! I really struggle with portraits and they take me twice as long to make so I get frustrated! 😊😊The anniversary is pretty much over now since our bodies don’t know it’s not an hour later so the boys went to bed. lol 😊
That is uncanny! I didn’t see no stinkin’ John Travolta until you said so, and then I had to look. Meh. Maybe the teensiest hints of ole Stayin’ Alive, but methinks that’s more the power of suggestion because of what you said.
That’s Oscar, alright.
Lol…Awww thanks so much!! 😃Yeah…once you see John it’s hard to unsee it. I’m still busy imaging what it would be like if he actually tried to play Oscar Wilde! 😳 haha
He does look a bit like John Travolta :-). It is disturbingly funny to think of John Travolta with a British accent and sense of humour! Your colors are perfect as always. How do you do it???
Happy anniversary! Glad all you needed was a little shave to look young and sexy again.
See?! He does right? And it’s sooo wild to imagine that actually happening! Haha! Thanks so much friend! I really appreciate you liking the colors…I never quite know what to do with flesh tones so it’s a hodgepodge of reds, umber, Burnt sienna and lots of water. No idea what one doing really. 😊
Yes, your colors are great! Presently can’t stop thinking about that bag of jelly beans you just posted. They look sooooo good :-).
Awww thanks!! I have to give another shout out to M. Graham on the color…I love those paints!! 😊 So rich!
Your portrait looks amazing – instantly recognizable. But, now that you mention it…it could be a little Stayin’ Alive…or Face Off, perhaps? 😉 Great pic, GREAT author, have a great anniversary!!!
Oooooo yeah! 👍🏻It’s like Face/Off …John stole Oscar’s face! Now THAT’S the kind of movie where he could get away with playing Oscar Wilde! No…wait…still not plausible. But thanks so much! Glad you liked it and thanks for the anniversary wishes friend! 😃😃
Oscar Wilde would be honored, I think, Charlie. Nicely done in your new larger sketch book. I look forward to your daily surprises.
Awww thanks Sharon!! ❤️😃 Appreciate that…portraits really aren’t my thing. But daily surprises are…the fun part is, I’m just as surprised as everyone else to see what will happen next! Lol
I actually think that drawing John Travolta playing Oscar Wilde is several layers of AWESOME!! 😀 I immediately knew it was Oscar Wilde before reading your posts! My sister and I are always making Dorian Gray jokes ourselves. I, too, look forward to what you’ll be doing for the National ____ days!
Haha! Thanks Teresa! ❤️😃I actually like it better thinking it’s Travolta as Wilde. And ya to the Dorian Gray jokes! That’s so fun! Yeah…should be an interesting month I hope…might be a World day or two thrown in as well. So global! Lol
I think John Travolta does a super Oscar Wilde! Your portraiture is good. I love that you included a hand. I hope I see more people during November!
Thanks so much Carmel!! 😃Glad you like this one. You may see more people…I’m not even sure what all the important “days” are that I’ll be celebrating yet with this new project! Hehe 😊
That’s a great portrait and belated Happy Anniversary!
Thanks so much Catherine!! ❤️😃
I’m sorry to say, but you can clearly paint faces or anything your put your mind to. This is awesome, Oscar would be proud!
Awww thanks Cathe! 💕😃 I just struggle so much with getting a likeness that it gets frustrating. Lol 😊
A marvellous distinguished portrait, Charlie – you continue to lie to me on your abilities – and a wonderful start to the new series. I love the Travolta remark, though the thing is I now can’t unsee it. He’d be a curious take on Wilde, for sure…
I hope you had a lovely anniversary! 🙂
Thanks so much Jacob! 😃We did have a wonderful anniversary! I don’t know what it is, but I just struggle with portraits and so I don’t find them as enjoyable. 😊😊And yeah…sorry for embedding the Travolta reference. Lol…I just couldn’t resist because it totally looks like that to me!
I don’t know what it is either because they look darn good to me, Travolta-esque or not! 😉 I look forward to more!
Awww thanks! You’re too sweet my friend!
I saw directly that this is good ol´ Oscar! 😉 Great job, Charlie!!!
Awww good… I can only see Travolta now, so glad you still see Wilde! Hehe😊😊Thanks so much Ann!! ❤️😃
LOL 😄
This is a really nicely painted portrait…and after coming off a month of doing portraits, I have a keen eye…..I do see a little Travolta, but the beauty is that you painted a 2fer….2 portraits in one….I did that a few times too….and if you like Marshall’s…which I am more a Maxx of for the Minumum gal…TJ Maxx you painted a bargain! hahaha…anyway, just having fun…great, great painting!
Awww thanks Rebecca! I really appreciate that! ❤️😃This is a 2fer! Yay! I can never find anything in the Men’s section of TJ Maxx! 😥lol
I could totally see John Travolta as Oscar Wilde…”One’s real life is so often the life that one does not lead.”
I’m a sucker for a good quotation and Oscar has the best quotes ever. So when is National Quotation Day? (K.–I realize I’m so out of my normal mode that I’m forgetting to sign my comments too!)
Hehe…it’s just nice to see you back friend! 😉❤️ I couldn’t find anything on National Quotation Day, but there are soooo many fun days that aren’t in November. I may have to try this again after this month! 😃
Definitely fun and full of the unexpected!
Belated Happy Anniversary! Your painting is fantastic and beautifully done. Recognized him immediately, but your Travolta comment made me pause followed quickly by laughter. Great post…cheers to you and Philippe 💕
Thanks so much Haunani! ❤️😃 Yes…he definitely has a Travolta vibe doesn’t he? Hehe… and thanks for the anniversary wishes!! Appreciate that!! 💕
Belated Happy Anniversary to you and Philippe, and holy hell Charlie – you MUST paint more people! He was instantly recognizable, mah brothah! 😀 Sometimes I think what we fear the most is also what we need the most. Or something like that. You know what I mean. lol.
You’re back?!!!! Omg!! Don’t ever leave me alone this long again sis!! I hate it!! And you know me…I really shouldn’t be left along long. 😊😍❤️ hehe …And thanks for the wishes! And the compliment…😊 I don’t know why, but I’ve yet to find my love of actually drawing people. I’ll try again though!
lol, nope, not back back…..just popped in to do October’s Draw A Bird day recap! I’ll probably blog more often after the holidays. I’m enjoying flying free, still making art every day, and enjoying the free time not blogging gives me lol! 😀 ((((((Charlie)))))) OK, I hope you do try again, because you have a gift! No pressure tho hehe.
You tease!! Hehe…if you’re not around to “pressure” me then I won’t do it! 😉 ok…I probably will, but it’s fun to have you ‘pushing’ me around like a real sister! I need it! Haha… Hope you enjoy your break friend. ❤️❤️😃And I didn’t draw a bird today because I couldn’t figure out how to make it work well with my National/World Day project …hehe… but I’ll try next month! 😉
