We’ll apparently it’s Banana Day, originating in 1996 by a student named Rodolfo P. Tellez at West Chester University as a way to boost school pride. Over 3,000 bananas were given out on campus and over 50 hours of community service contributed on that historic day. Today, it’s really just a fun day to pay tribute to the delicious yellow fruit and favorite sack lunch snack. Keep in mind, this day is not to be confused with Banana Lover’s Day, Banana Cream Pie Day, Banana Split Day, Banana Bread Day, or Banana Pudding Lovers Month. And that’s actually just a few of the celebration days devoted to this much-loved food.

Truthfully, I don’t really have a story about a banana, I just wanted to try doodlewashing them for the first time after yesterday’s garlic. But I do love bananas, so I guess any day set aside to celebrate them is a good thing. And apparently I’m not alone in the love as over 100 billion bananas are consumed each year making them the 4th largest agricultural product in the world. They’re also naturally radioactive thanks to a material they contain in the form of Potassium-40. Though you’d have to eat a ton of bananas to compete with the potassium your body already produces and ton more than that to actually start glowing.

Americans eat more bananas than any other fruit. In fact, it’s consumed more than oranges and apples combined. I’m guessing it’s just because it’s much easier to eat a banana and Americans are notoriously lazy when it comes to food. Not only is it easiest to peel, you don’t even really have to chew it. Just sort of swallow it down like pudding. What’s not to love? So tonight, set aside some time to relax like a little monkey and grab yourself a banana. Just peel and enjoy!

  1. Funny you should mention it, I’m eating a banana right now! Lol! 😉 Your doodlewash could make me a banana lover which I’m not…yes, I know I’m probably one of the few people who don’t like them but I do try to eat one once a week! 🙂 Happy Banana day, Charlie!

  2. Gorgeous! What a great day to celebrate. Your painting is beautiful, right down to the little flush of green…just the way I like them, and I like the way you handled the banana slices by keeping them in their skin… brilliant. Thank you for sharing.

  3. Beeeyoootiful banana doodlewash! Seriously! I’m not a banana lover (though we grow them indoors hoping they’d eventually fruit) but yours look mouthwateringly good! <3

The saddest thing about bananas is that in order to make them shippable and mass-marketable, they've narrowed it down to mainly one species that's one of the blandest of them all (but hardier to make them less prone to bruising when shipped). Plus, there is so little genetic diversity that one bad infection would wipe most of them out.

  4. This is a fantastic doodlewash Charlie, delicious! Love bananas, but they do quickly go off their prime for taste, if you don’t eat them on the right day. But all is not lost because BANOFFEE PIE to the rescue, I love the magic trick where you peel a banana and SURPRISE it is already sliced.

  5. You got the yellow just right! I’m actually surprised that bananas are the most-eaten fruit. I love fruit, but it’s way down on my list. And you have to eat it on just the right day…that’s definitely too much work for me (and my memory). Inevitably they are rotten before I’ve remembered to eat them! Now, apples…(K)

  6. Yummy!! I had a glance of your post yesterday afternoon and immediately wanted to have one.. So I asked my son to pick them up.. Lol. Your doodlewash is wonderful! Love the shadows! I used to make peanut butter-chocolate covered bananas for my kids that I freeze and then slice.. Now Dole makes them (without the peanut butter). Love them!

  7. Oh, they just look so darn real!! Love the hints of green. This makes me wish I actually liked bananas 😉 I’m the only person in the world who doesn’t like them, apparently. Banana milkshake, on the other hand…! <3

  8. Ooohhh, I’m a monkey…where’s my bananas?!! 😀 <3
Your doodle is so refined, Charlie…love it!
We have a species called Lady Fingers which are much smaller, take quite a while to ripen so won't go rotten quickly and, once ready (blackish spots on the skin) are so sweet and delicious. I love bananas simply sliced with a light sprinkling of raw sugar and runny cream — yum!
