This may quite possibly be the fastest doodlewash I’ve ever made, clocking in at under 8 minutes. It’s my birthday today and I was nearly running out of time to sneak in and make this post before the festivities begin (and yeah, I totally put a birthday cake prompt on this day! If your birthday is also in April, Happy Birthday!) By festivities, I mainly mean Philippe, Phineas and I having a basically normal evening with the addition of a champagne toast, little presents and some cake! The “cake” above is actually a mille-feuille or Napoleon. Philippe and I share one car and since I had it today, I had the task of popping into the bakery to choose my own cake. Let it be known that I should never be allowed into a bakery without proper supervision. This little pink Napoleon was just one of the extra pastries I grabbed for something to sketch today, or at least, that was my excuse. For the actual cake, I was struggling to decide between two and convinced myself that one shouldn’t have to struggle on their birthday, so I bought them both. Let’s just say, it’s going to be a very sweet evening ahead!

Birthday Card From Philippe
Card By Philippe

I’m excited for the little gifts that Philippe has for me. I asked for nothing at all this year, so I’m curious to see what he came up with. He’s been talking about them for a couple days, trying desperately not to hint or reveal what’s actually coming next. On his lunch break today, he sketched the little card shown here which is a wonderful gift! Equally wonderful was that the happy little dancing cake only included three candles and not the actual amount required. So I can happily be like a kid again for the night, except for the champagne, of course. Sometimes it’s good to mix a bit of grown up pleasures into the mix. But in the end, I will strive to never grow too old in spirit. That’s something that I can actually control while nature does whatever it must to the rest of me.

So, tonight, a quick toast to all of my lovely creative friends out there! I hope you’re enjoying a fantastic evening, filled with wonderful things that make you smile. I’ll be in a blissful sugar coma later, and it will be totally worth it! I read somewhere that calories don’t count if it’s your birthday. Well, perhaps I just read that here when I wrote it, but still, it’s published so it must be fact, right? Birthdays aren’t often quite the big events as we get older, unless it’s a decade milestone. My, still-not-quite-50 birthday will be celebrated in a very low-key manner, but still has all the sense of celebration I love. And yes, I’m still giddy like a little kid. And Philippe is making spaghetti and meatballs for dinner, so life is really just as it should be. There’s fun music playing and the champagne glasses are topped off and ready to signal another year ahead. Even small, rather quaint, and not particularly notable, the evening is still sure to be a birthday blast!

  1. That cake looks good, Charlie! 💗
And Happy Birthday! I – ahem – reached my ‘milestone’ birthday last month, although in reality I’m still 24. Always have been. Enjoy your celebrations, enjoy your cake and enjoy your sugar rush! Have a good one! 😀

  2. Spaghetti and meatballs and two kinds of cake and a dog to pet?!!! Don’t sing yet, I’m coming over to celebrate with you. Happy Birthday to you, Charlie, three years old and holding. And I love Philippe’s charming card. May your year be filled with light, laughter, love, and art. More cake couldn’t hurt either.

(Calories? No dirty words allowed on birthdays.)

  3. Charlie! I’ve never read ‘ calories don’t count if it’s your birthday’, but – as the bellman said in ‘The Hunting of the Snark’, “What I tell you three times is true.” So, I tell you, “Calories don’t count if it’s your birthday! Calories DON’T count if it’s your birthday! Calories don’t COUNT if it’s your birthday!” Ta da! Happy Birthday!!! Eat cake to your heart’s content!

  4. Hahaha, well I hope you had a great time and that you’re enjoying your ‘sugar coma’! That does sound good 😉 The cake looks yummy, and I can’t believe it was made in under eight minutes! That’s some baking prowess right there and puts my wheel to shame!

  5. Happy belated birthday Charlie. I hope you had a blast! 🎂🍰 Your cake looks yummy. Glad you bought both cakes!!! Life is too short to take the time to decide. A very cute card from Philippe.

  6. Happy bday 🍰🙂 that card is adorable! Btw, loving the comment about calories not counting on your special day! I will definitely have to remember that one! 😁
