Written by Today it’s time to celebrate all types of candy, and I’ve chosen to illustrate it with the first treat that popped into my head from childhood. This is a Brach’s Sundaes Neopolitan Coconut, which was said to be flavored in Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry to imitate a Neopolitan ice cream sundae. So, I opted to paint with just three colors as well. It was actually made from real coconut and was like getting a delicious dessert in the size of a little bite-sized portion. Unlike the previous vintage treats I sketched, these have sadly been discontinued about four years ago. No more grabbing a little square and nibbling it slowly to taste just the strawberry, then the vanilla, then the chocolate only to discover each time that they all tasted nearly the same. I don’t eat much candy of any kind these days, but if someone placed one of these in front of me, it would be impossible to resist ripping it open and taking a bite.
Also of note, it’s Fountain Pen Day, which I definitely support as I wouldn’t know what to do without my fountain pens. I love them. They’re like old friends at this point who travel with me wherever I go. And the best thing about them is that they can help me resurrect my favorite candy and keep a piece of it forever it in my little red sketchbook. But as lovely as all that sounds, I really just want this damn candy back! There’s some “other” brand of it that exists and so I guess I could try that version, but getting it in some alien packaging in a different size kills all the fun memories. It’s not particuarly “good” candy it’s just candy that makes me happy when I eat it.
So here’s to candy lovers everywhere and may the candy dream of your childhood still be in existence. Yeah, the fact that mine is not totally makes me feel old. But I’ll always have the wonderful memories. On the other hand, it’s actually kind of cool to have experienced something that can no longer be experienced. It makes the remembering even more special that way. Perhaps, if I tried them today, I would find that it tastes completely awful. But thankfully, its perserved in time and will always taste amazing to me. That’s the power of a good memory and a tiny little doodlewash to help keep that memory alive and well.

Not this specific kind… they were discontinued by Brach’s a few years ago. But I’m thinking about trying the other brand I saw on Amazon… just to see! hehe
These were one of my favorites! Mom would share them with me because none of my sibs liked coconut. Haven’t had one in years either, but in my memory they are most delicious because it was a treasure shared between me and my mom 💖. Thanks for that, Charlie 😉

OMG! You been taking me back to some good memories. When I was little we shopped at Safeway and they had a Brach’s stand. I would get a bag and fill it. I loved the neopolitan candy (my name) was delish. Thanks for the memories!

I have never heard of this candy so it must never have been available in the UK. Shame because it sounds pretty tasty. I wonder if it is a bit like the coconut macaroons (which was mainly potato) I loved when I was wee.
I think these were a more of a coconut taste than those if I recall. This was pretty much just a bunch of coconut flakes and sugar mushed together! hehe But soooo good!! 😍

Don’t you just want to scream when something you love is discontinued? For me it’s Zwieback (a thick toasted cracker) made by Nabisco. These were slices of very dry and crunchy moon-sliver shaped toasts, the very best palette for a variety of toppings. I especially love anchovy fillets but cheese spreads of all kinds also taste great. Zwieback had a unique flavor that no other cracker can match and for some reason, they were always sold in the baby food aisle. Wish I could still get them.
I do want to scream!! hehe… yeah… it’s the worst when something you love disappears. I had to google Zwiback as I hadn’t heard of those. hehe… yeah… they have a little kid on the box. Love that you loved kids food. Apparently there’s another brand called Brandt that makes them. Also a kid on the box. Fun!

Happy to see that you also enjoy coconut Charlie…we never had any of those delicious looking squares of coconut in Johannesburg, SA …but what we did have was a coconut, fudge and toffee shop, in Elloff street (the centre of Jo’burg in those days) and for the moment I cannot remember the shops name (old age I guess)! But that was all that they sold coconut , toffee and fudge in decadent, lovely, soft, fresh, big squares, ( the name of the shop is on the tip of my tongue) nothing was wrapped. I would take a cake tin with me and the assistants would line the cake tin with wax proof paper and carefully put in what I ordered, covering each layer with the wax proof paper. When you took out the piece you wanted you had a square aproximately 2 ins x 2ins and you could just break off a piece which was so fresh the coconut pieces came apart separately… really miss them….I have never seen them anywhere else!
