Here’s a tiny doodlewash for today of a couple chicken legs for the virtual #DoodlewashDinner. Also, this is my rather unorthodox entry for this month’s Draw A Bird Day which is hosted again by Laura at Create Art Everyday. Both she and Kerfe at Method Two Madness egged me on to join even though I’m in a food theme this month. I still think this might be a marginal entry since I’ve failed to draw the entire bird, even cooked. But I always loved drumsticks when I was a kid, mostly because of the built-in handle. If you’re actually going to eat “meat-on-bone,” which I don’t really like dealing with at all, then this is by far the best way to go!
Being given a drumstick as a kid was like winning a food prize. For me, it was the savory equivalent of an ice cream cone. Not only was it super tasty, but I got to eat without any silverware which always felt kind of naughty and incredibly fun. At least that was the case with the fried chicken in the red and white striped bucket that we would eat. I could never really clean my bone, though, and would always just eat the big bit at the end and move on to the mashed potatoes and gravy which I liked even more. It’s been years now since I’ve actually eaten fried chicken and decades since I’ve tried the kind in a bucket, but I remember how excited I got back then.
There’s so much food today I know to avoid and unfortunately, all of it seems to be from my best childhood memories. Honestly, having chicken in a bucket one day and fried SPAM the next, it’s a wonder I even survived to adulthood, but it all tasted so darn good. Chicken in a bucket was like having a family picnic in your house at night! And time spent as a family was always a wonderful thing. I hope everyone has enjoyed a little family time on this Mother’s Day. Moms are pretty much the most amazing people on the planet. It’s not just the big things they do, but the little ones as well. Sometimes, it’s just that moment where they smile and hand you that wonderful piece of fried chicken with a handle.
You’re all invited to a Doodlewash Dinner Party during the month of May! Just tag your food or drink image #doodlewashdinner and I’ll feature you and your culinary creations in a delicious Doodlewash Gallery at the end of the month!

gorgeous post Charlie…. the art and The Heart!!!!!!!!!!! cheers, Debi
Awww thanks so much Debi! I’m so thrilled you liked this post! Hope your Mother’s Day was wonderful! 😃💕
I have heard that they taste nice, lol I will have that tomato I see perched on the side, I never had a red and white stripped bucket, but I did once try a zinger, I would like to say’ that’s a cute bird’ I’m sure it was, instead I will say ‘finger licken good doodlewash’.
Hehe! Thanks Rebecca! 😃💕Yeah… these days I’m much more about the tomatoes, but I need a bird for Draw A Bird day, so this is what I chose. Fun memories though! 😊
Oh my – drum roll please, winner winner chicken dinner – draw a bird day cleverness tie-in to your month of doodled dinners. Love it, Charlie!
LOL… thanks Cynthia! I couldn’t miss Draw A Bird Day, but some months it can get a little weird to try depending on my theme! Glad you liked it! 😃💕
In my family the youngest always got the drumsticks, and I am sure it was because of the built-in handles. Being the second of five I didn’t get one very often, but when I did I always hoped it would be extra crispy and not original recipe. Love the doodlewash, Charlie, and technically it does fit in for draw a bird day. That’s really thinking outside the box, or bucket of chicken! 😄🐔
That’s an awesome story, Carol! Thanks for sharing! 😃💕I was in between… I like the flavor of original recipe, but those crunchy bits were awesome! hehe It made me want to try it again, but like most things I’ll probably stick with the memory!
Good job in covering all the bases Charlie…I loved that fried chicken in a bucket too, and every once in awhile I do sneak in a piece or two. But buscuits! That’s what I remember with fried chicken best. Food and family…always a good combination. (K)
Thanks Kerfe! Had to figure out a way to play along! hehe 😃💕 Awww yes! The biscuits… those were amazing. I really think I always preferred all the sides more than the main event.
Haha, I love your take on draw a bird day! I love a drumstick and cole slaw. Very cool painting Charlie.
Thanks Sharon! 😃💕This one was tiny as I didn’t have much time, but I figured I needed to get a bird in somehow! Hehe Glad you liked it!
Brilliant take on bird day, my dear! ❤️ Fried chicken is one of my favorite foods but I prefer wings to drumsticks so we can eat together! 😄
Thanks Teresa! 😃💕And that’s perfect then! Good to know we can share fried chicken without getting into a fight! LOL
For a bird on a stick
fried may be your favorite pick
But if the chicken you ask
it will take you to task
“How’d you’d like YOUR thigh fried?”
Lol… a fun pome, Judy! Thanks for speaking out for the bird! 😉
Thanks for the chuckle on your “bird” today, Charlie! 🐔❤️🐔 Love your creative thinking here! And I think the potatoes and gravy was the best part! Lol! 😝
Thanks Jill! 😃💕Hehe… this was a weird entry, but it still counts! Lol And yes to the sides… they were always my favorite. I also like green beans as well!
What a fun Doodlewash today! Brings back memories for me as well, though our chicken was always homemade. The drumstick was fun and tasty. You’ve got a great sense of humor, Charlie.
Aww thanks Sharon! 😃💕Yeah… nothing beats homemade food that doesn’t come in a bucket! hehe
You did a great job Charlie and you were able to pair the doodlewash dinner chicken with the draw a bird day which I forgot about the bird day! 🙂
Thanks Carolina!😃💕 Yeah, some months it gets weird when I try to play along and stick to my theme. Back in January it was a stuffed Big Bird from Sesame Street. 😊 But it’s on the 8th every month… add an alert to your calendar! hehe
Yes I will add an alert on my calendar I like the birds and it is fun and great on motivation and creativity to play along! 😉
Now there’s a unique spin on bird day!
LOL… yeah… it was really my only option this month, but I think it works! Even if it’s not really on my menu anymore! 😊
Love it, Charlie! I totally agree with Cynthia! Oh you’ve made me hungry again!! I really hope you and P do a cookbook. Seriously. It’d be amazing! Have a terrific week!
Thanks Laura! 😃💕Hehe.. it would be fun to do! It’s just time that doesn’t seem to be my friend. And I’m easily distracted so that probably isn’t helping matters on the book front. 😊lol
Yummy painting. I could get fat just looking at all your food entries. But I laughed all the fat away when I saw it was also an entry for the ‘bird of the month’. Lol
Thanks! Haha! It’s a bird, right? lol Glad I made you chuckle Teri!! 😃💕
Haha – I expect the poor chicken was hoping for better after being invited to the Draw a Bird Day Doodlewash Dinner!
They look sticky and wonderful. This being said, I never really have been a huge fan of eating chicken this way – I was fussy like that. Furthermore, as a child, people promised ‘drumsticks’ for dinner and I got my hopes up, thinking they meant the lollies… so, with the disappointment as it was, I probably have an bit of an unfair grudge on the drumstick!
Awww… now I have this sad image of little Jacob not being given lollies. Yeah… I’d hold a grudge on drumsticks as well then. hehe… Actually, I grew up to be really fussy and don’t really like anything on a bone. It helps that I rarely eat meat. lol But no worries, depending on my themes in the coming months, I’m sure I’ll have a chance to make it up to this poor chicken! 😉
A very delicious-looking bird drawing and a beautiful new twist on draw-a-bird-day! 🙂
Hehe…thanks Myriam! 😃💕 Something a little different for DABD! 😊
