Since today is Easter I figured rather than share an actual bunny, I’d share a little bit of what I found in my Easter basket. We got a little basket yesterday and filled it up with chocolates. Sure, we’re too old for such things, and yes, we already knew what was inside come this morning, but that wasn’t really the point. It was just an excuse to buy chocolates. This particular treat made me chuckle as the ears of chocolate easter bunnies were always my favorite part. As cute as the bunny began, it was always a bit morbid looking at a hollowed out bunny staring up at you as if it were saying, “Why the hell did you just do that?” This confection solves that problem nicely by just leaving those little judgey eyes out entirely. Honestly, as a kid, the hollow chocolates always seemed like a bit of a trick. Biting into them I was expecting a full chocolate experience and instead was met with stale air and little shards that crumbled all over my shirt. I wanted to talk to the Easter Bunny about this, so I was thrilled when that special day came when we finally met each other.

My mother took me to the local amusement park and they had created a special seasonal section just for kids. The main attraction was actually getting to meet the Easter bunny at the end. We turned the corner and there was a gigantic white bunny sitting there. It wasn’t big simply because I was tiny at the time, it was actually fricking huge and stood nearly 12 feet high. This was disturbing and more than a little bizarre. In none of the stories I’d been read would I have ever expected the Easter Bunny to be larger than an elephant. Something wasn’t quite right. Add to this, the fact that the bunny was talking to people and yet never actually moved. I was truthfully quite glad it didn’t move, as that would have freaked me out, but obviously there was a game being played here. I immediately toddled off to the rear of this giant imposter as my mother asked me where I was going. “I’m going to find the person with the microphone,” I said. She just looked at me and sighed, which she would find herself doing quite often over the next several years.

I figured these little tricks were just part of the game the Easter Bunny played, like hiding eggs from little children. Weirder still was the fact that a rabbit could lay eggs, much less colored eggs, so the whole thing was just a bit of a joke really. But for a little kid like me, it was all still a fun game to play. I believed because it made me happier. I loved all the stories and traditions. I often miss those times that I had with my family back then. Sharing those special days like this one and that fabulous feeling of happiness and love. No matter what you believe or celebrate, those days are always there, and they’re the most cherished days of all. Those moments that you never forget and the people that will always claim a special place in your heart. I’ve come to appreciate all this more and more as I get older. But, I’m equally happy to steal a little moment to be that kid again, excited to dig into an Easter basket, full of hope and optimism, while nibbling on chocolate bunny ears.

  1. What a sweet and very funny memory, Charlie. I love these childhood memories of yours.

I remember getting my very first and probably my very last chocolate Easter bunny. My dad was in medical school, I was 3 1/2 years old, the very sweet lady who lived in the apartment below us treated me like a princess. She gave me a chocolate bunny. I was totally enchanted – I had no idea what this delectable thing was all about – we’re Jewish – but I loved that bunny. Eventually I got to eat the bunny. Well, I got to eat the ears – my dad finished the rest. But I’ll never forget the wonder of that chocolate bunny or the kind lady downstairs who thought to make a very little kid feel special.

I don’t think it’s the holiday (any holiday) that matters as much as how we treat each other, how we make each other feel special. The lady downstairs absolutely understood the most important thing about what I needed and she gave it with love and kindness. Thanks for triggering this memory for me, Charlie.

  2. What a fun story!! Sometimes it’s easy to see why people in costume terrify kids. One time I saw someone at the grocery store dressed as Dora the Explorer. She was HUGE!! First of all, this was supposed to be a character that was a child, maybe 4 years old, but this was clearly an adult, a tall one at that. But that head… the head alone was probably 3-4 feet wide. Terrifying.

  3. This is the perfect solution to that frightful quandary! I remember being given a chocolate duck for Easter and feeling really awful about eating the thing – he was just too adorable. Hilarious about the giant bunny, though – I’d have been searching for the microphone chap too, desperately trying to make it a little less creepy!
