Written by Today we have a little three color doodlewash of some foil-wrapped Christmas candy. I’m not really a fan of this kind of candy, but I do rather like Dolly Parton’s song Hard Candy Christmas. Not a typical holiday classic as it was actually written for a musical about a whorehouse, but it’s a lovely song nonetheless. Also, tomorrow is National Hard Candy Day so you’ve plenty of time to decide how you’re going to celebrate. The thing I do love about this kind of hard candy is that it’s shiny and festive. Each one looks like a little wrapped gift that must contain something wonderful in order to be wrapped so elegantly. Granted, it’s just a little brick of pure sugar inside, but the on the outside, it’s a glorious signal of the holidays ahead. We’re now less than a week away from Christmas Eve and my anticipation is mounting fast!
Although there was lots of sugar candy around at Christmas, I was much more a fan of the treats that came in the form of chocolate. When I was at my mother’s home in Texas a couple of weeks ago, she had a bowl filled with red and green gumdrops. Since they were sitting there, I popped a couple in my mouth only to discover that I didn’t really like them at all anymore. I don’t know whether it was the sudden shock of sweet or the complete inability to discern exactly what flavor they were wanting to be, but it was not a pleasant experience. I decided that gumdrops are best left as colorful ornamentation and décor for gingerbread houses and shouldn’t actually be consumed. Though, come to think of it, I’ve never actually made a gingerbread house, and should definitely add that to my bucket list of things to try.
As I type this, I’m looking at a little silver candy dish on the table that’s roughly in the shape of a reindeer. I can’t remember where I purchased it, but I rather like the way it glitters. I’ve just now realized that it’s also sadly empty as we failed to get any candy to fill it this year. In years past, we’ve added some red and white candy cane bits that looked rather festive, but we always end up throwing the candy away, so it seems like a waste. But now, I’m imagining it full and glistening with the shiny colors of the holidays and I rather miss the sight. In occurs to me that sometimes being practical isn’t really the point of the holidays. Even if I’m not a fan of the treats themselves, I really can’t deny that at this time of year, there’s just something beautiful about a bowl filled with shiny Christmas candy.

It was Hard Candy Day and I missed it, darnit! Those wrappers are beautifully done! They are so like little pressies, even if the sweets inside are sometimes a bit icky – I am partial to candies, as I’m sure I’ve mentioned 😉 but chocolate is becoming a far more dependable bet as I get older. I’m looking forward to this O’Shields gingerbread house, though! Perhaps it can have a gingerbread zonkey in the garden? 😉

That’s too funny… I changed to chocolate as well when I was older. Well… not just chocolate as it’s often paired with wine. But now more than anything in the world, I want that gingerbread house with a zonkey in the garden!!!! AWESOME!!! 😍

You fill that reindeer candy dish and invite me over – I’ll eat them, search out the chocolates as well, and you’ll feel satisfied that decorating with candy was not a waste at all.
