Part of the fun of doing a month of open-ended prompts is that I have absolutely no idea what will come to mind when I sit down to sketch, paint, and post. For today’s prompt of saturated, we ended up here, mostly because I turned down a doughnut this morning and I’ve been thinking about it every since. But, as ever, it all fits, since saturated can mean with water, and the coffee is certainly saturated in that. Also the pink doughnut is saturated in color, and no doubt filled with saturated fat which is why I turned it down in the first place. But I miss it like it an unrequited love. I adore doughnuts, but as we approach spring, my wardrobe would adore me more if I’m able to avoid them. The weather was dangerously warmer today already, making it one of the last days I can add a light sweater to hide my winter indiscretions. I kept thinking I had a bit more time, but I always think like that, and time just always creeps up on me.

I grabbed a pair of jeans today and had to return them to the closet as they wouldn’t button quite right. I don’t ever weigh myself, as clothes are perfectly capable of telling you all of the bad news you’d never want to hear. I was talking to my mother on the phone the other day and my niece, who’s on a diet, was there and asking in the background if my mother had a scale. My mother’s response was simply, “No, I quit that years ago.” I have to agree. Live is too short to be weighed by the numbers. I’m fine with just cutting back a bit until my pants button properly. And diets always come with way too many restrictions that sort of suck the life out of eating. As you know, I’m not a fan of lots of rules. I like to live life with a sense of direction and purpose that guides itself without trying to be something its not. I’m a guy who loves dessert, and I’m not going to let anything stop me from enjoying it. That said, I’ll just have to throttle back on other things appropriately in order to make room for it.

To me, life is just a game of trying to work in all the things you love with all of the other little required things. Although Philippe and I are generally hermits, we have quite a lovely weekend of plans ahead. Tonight, in just a few minutes actually so I have to finish this post, we’re heading to hear a jazz group called The Hot Sardines, We only recently discovered them and decided to go based on just a couple songs we heard, so it should be a lovely and surprising night. Tomorrow we’re headed to a play, in the afternoon as we do still like spending our evenings at home. But that’s two eventful things in less than 24 hours so it’s a bit of a record for us. I hope that each of you have a wonderful weekend ahead and enjoy all the little treats you can sneak in amidst the necessary bits in life. And if you get a moment to really indulge yourself, I highly recommend a little taste of coffee and doughnuts.

  1. I do hope you both enjoyed your evening. Sounds like the perfect way to end a work week. Your coffee and donuts look delicious and I have to say my sister and I ended up at “Dunkin” and enjoyed a treat similar to this one. Just wish we were as resistant as you are when it comes to a sweet treat like a donut. Enjoy the play on Saturday.

  2. Yeah, doughnuts are do-not for me too, and I miss them. I love your painting of them, though! Have a wonderful time on your outings – we just came back from a pizza place that makes their own beer and grows most of the ingredients for the pizza. It was excellent!

  3. Fortunately for me, doughnuts are one of the very few sweets I don’t like. I’m an ice cream, pastry, cookies, etc. kind of person. I hope you enjoy your weekend – it sounds great!

  4. Yes to donuts and coffee! My niece and her little rugrats are visiting this weekend! We’re going to paint! What fun we will have! And I’ll have some new refrigerator art to remember the weekend by.

  5. Fantabulous post to accompany my cup of coffee, though sadly, sans doughnut. Now, I am wishing for those divine treats. Your wise approach to the rules of life is a beacon of light in their darkness. I think a book about your method of weight control would be well received. Sound advice and a doughnut…that works for me! Thank-you!

    1. Thanks so much, Ellen! 😃💕 Hehe… my weight control book would be short and probably boring. Just stop a bit when your pants get tight would probably be the entire premise! Lol And THEN, you can go back and have that darn donut! hehe

  6. I just discovered your blog and i love the way you paint and esp the way you write! Going thru a detox myself to fit into my pants, and struggling to find time to paint amid life’s obligations, your post was so relevant to me! Have a great weekend!

    1. Aww that’s so wonderful to hear! 😃💕Hope you’ll be coming back again and again! There’s always time in the day to sneak in a little painting. And it’s SO worth it when you do! I couldn’t imagine a day without it. Hope you have a great weekend as well!

    2. Same, same and absolutely the same! Deary me … on this amazing blog, I’ve also found someone who takes the words right off my tongue! That painting Charlie posted; I can taste those sprinkles. I would buy it, then eat only half and feel good. So twisted, because I’d feel better if I’d not bought it in the first place!!

  7. Charlie, I am SO proud of you for walking away from those donuts! I am a huge pastry aficionado, and those flaky comestibles win half the time. Maybe this will help: I’ve done a “jelly donut taste test” and can tell you there are only 2 places in Denver wherein you can find the BEST jelly donuts: Rosenberg’s Deli (Fridays only)–they are like a croissant, with enough “pull” to make them fascinating; the other, is Safeway at Evans & Downing Streets. I’m a deep grease snob, so perhaps this may help. I’m not sure what state you live in, but I hope this helps. Also, may I ask how long it took for you to paint those tasty donuts and coffee? LOVED its freshness! (and thank you for your computer assistance. I’ll figure it out, get with the times). Have a lovely day!

    1. Thanks so much, Frances! 😃💕 hehe… those sound like delicious suggestions. I’m just a couple states over in Kansas City, Missouri! 😉 As for the donuts, they like everything I paint were done in less than an hour. That’s all the time I have each day to paint!

  8. There have been lots of yummy-looking doughnuts popping up on my reader of late, and now these – it’s getting too much! I’m actually eating cookies at the moment, but that pink frosting makes me think I’m missing out. Sigh. Hope you had fun with the band!

  9. Oh! How much I just want to grab this yummy donut!! The colors are amazing! And the world would be a much sader place if we wouldn’t indulge in those baked goodies from time to time. 😉 I´m all for cream tea, biscuits, cookies, brownies… you name it! 😀

  10. This is a first .. for me (but that’s because I’ve been under a stone for twenty years). A blog illustrated by the author. Fabulous. Can’t wait to scroll back through. I’ll take both the coffee and the donut and you know what? Ironic as I’m wearing work out leggings today because NONE OF MY JEANS FIT ME any more .. boo hoo …

      1. Tee hee … ‘winter indiscretions’ … love it!! Could cover a multitude of sins 🙈.. my first thought on waking was water. Not because I was hungover or dehydrated but because I know I don’t drink enough of it!
What am I sitting here drinking now?
        Tea.. 🙄
