Written by As things get closer and closer to the start of World Watercolor Month, I’m getting really excited. I sincerely hope everyone out there who loves painting with watercolor will use the hashtag #WorldWatercolorMonth throughout July so we can build the most amazing global gallery of watercolors in the world! Today’s prompt for June was cucumbers, which I really love now, though never truly appreciated as a kid. If you’d told me my lunch would consist of cucumber slices I would have nearly cried back then. But today, I’m happy to report that I love this little vegetable, well fruit, actually, that’s used as a vegetable, if you’re a botanist. I’m not, so I’ll just refer to it as a vegetable. Although I do eat them throughout the year, the cool crisp bite of one in the hot summer is particularly enjoyable. I still have much to do to prefer for July’s festivities, but it’s nice to take a little break to simply paint and enjoy the watercolors that have brought us all together. I love our group and it’s truly an honor and pleasure to be a member of such a wonderful community.
I’m also extra excited because July 3rd marks my two-year anniversary of daily doodlewashing! It all started with a little tree and has grown into a large community of artists from all over the world. When I made that little tree I could never have imagined where it would take me. Art journeys are as unique as the artist themselves, but they all share one important thing in common. They start and continue from a passion that words simply can’t describe. That need to make something that’s born in all of us, and fully embraced by those of us who decide to throw caution to the wind and make art. I love hearing the stories of people, just like me, who felt that thrill of picking up a paint brush for the first time. It’s really not easy to describe the feeling. It’s like a door opening onto infinite possibilities and eyes that will never quite see the same way again. This is the very feeling that caused my initial enthusiasm and has kept me marching forward to this day. Nearly 720 days of daily painting later, my passion for getting others to experience the same feeling has never dimmed.
Just weeks into my lovely new addiction, I was talking about creating a movement. Not just about watercolor, but about freeing ourselves to create and express our lives through art. To simply “DO.” A month after I started, I had already made buttons, like an excited child who was just certain everything would work out. It was just Philippe, Aesha and I back then, dreaming big dreams and less than a year later we would add Jessica to the crew with an introductory review of one of my faves, M. Graham watercolors. And today, we are just about to pass the mark of 50,000 artists in our World Watercolor Group on Facebook. Proof that passion and commitment will always make your art journey incredibly rewarding. This group that we’ve formed is ours to shape and grow. A group built for artists by the very artists themselves. And though there’s much to do before we kick off another month-long celebration of watercolor, I’m not worried at all. Things do always have a way of working out. And so, thanks to all of you, I have no worries at all, and you just might say, I’m as cool as a cucumber.

Cucumbers are one of my favs, especially in the summer. Definitely cool and refreshing – just like your doodlewash! I am so excited about WWM2017 and can’t wait to see what everyone creates, make new friends, and help kids get the art supplies they need! Charlie, you are something special! 😘

Cucumbers are my favorite. Lifelong, as a matter of fact – my very first cat – an orange tabby – I named Cucumber – I was three. My parents were mystified but went with it. Yesterday I had a lovely cucumber cocktail – I’ll have to tag you – you should paint it! 🙂 I’m so grateful for this community and shocked to learn you’ve only been doing the daily painting for two years. It’s so wonderful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing so much time with us!

I’ve started a new painting of a big sunflower and plan to finish it in time to post on the first day in July to celebrate the beginning of World Watercolor Month. Yay for Charlie who originated this site to celebrate.
