Day 30 – My Favorite Snack

When I thought of my favorite snack, the first thing that came to mind was cheese and crackers. Today, of course, it consists of a lovely cheese board with imported cheeses paired with a lovely glass of wine. But then, I remembered that this craving is nothing new, the cheese and crackers anyway, the wine came much later. When I was a kid, I loved the fun-sized little containers of cheese and crackers that came with a little red stick for spreading. The entire ritual of dipping into that impossibly yellow-orange cheese and spreading it across a cracker, careful to save enough to make it through all four was so much fun. To be honest, I’m not sure if I even enjoyed the flavor all that much, just the fact that it came in a little kit that created a enjoyable experience. Soon, larger snack packs followed that included bits of meat as well, but I always loved this one most of all. Sure, I guess the whole concept might be a bit weird if it consisted of brie and water crackers, but I would certainly be the first to try it.

So many of my tastes have changed over the years and I’ve been referred to as a “foodie” by some. I’ve no idea what this term even means, but it’s usually used because I turn down most packaged foods. They truly aren’t as healthy, but the real reason is because I’ve discovered just how great food can taste with only a handful of ingredients and no fillers. I’d happily consume those other foods if they actually tasted better to me, so I guess I’m not a “food snob,” but give me artisan cheeses and meat from a local farm and I’m in heaven. Sure, the good stuff costs more, but one shouldn’t really be indulging in those things every day, so I just wait to enjoy the really good stuff as a sort of treat. This makes it taste even better still! Like homemade ice cream when I was a kid. We only had it a couple times a year, so it was the most incredible thing in the world. Last summer, I decided to make our ice cream, and after the first several bowls, we lost interest. I haven’t made any at all this summer. Sometimes, the best food in life is the kind that’s the most rare.

There’s only one day left of this month’s adventure (depending on your time zone) and I hope many of you will join me in September as we paint life’s simple pleasures. The prompts for next month are a collection of things that people rank as making them the happiest. I invite each of you to explore them with me and take a trip through all of life’s lesser moments that end up having the greatest meaning of all. It’s funny that will all the advanced technology and amazing new things that are released into the world each day, lists like these don’t change very much over the years. It makes my heart happy to know that the same things we all enjoyed in our childhood are precisely the things we’ve grown up to love. While smartphones and surfing the internet never seem to make the list, those simple pleasures that we’ve enjoyed for decades are always there. As surely as things change, they have the intriguing habit of remaining much the same. And no matter what form it comes in, I’m still incredibly happy when I have that memorable opportunity to enjoy my favorite snack.

  1. I remember these little snacks and you are so right about making sure you have enough spread for all four crackers. 😊 the cheeze kind of reminded me of cheese whiz. Remember that? You painted the snack perfectly. 😊

  2. I remember giving my children those snacks for a treat once in a while. We’ve always eaten made-from-scratch foods as our regular diet. You’re right that real food does taste a lot better!

  3. So this is your cheese board – hilarious. Thanks for making me laugh. I’m not even sure if qualifies as cheese. But yeah, kids love the flavor. I love Manchego and brie and smoked cheeses, especially with lox slices.

  4. you make me remember Fun Dip. Remember that from your childhood? Those sugar sticks you licked and dipped into flavored sugar that tasted like Tang or nuclear strawberries or grape explosions. Like you, I don’t think I even particularly liked it. I loved the process of it and the fun of dipping and playing with one’s food. Finger foods are still my favorite but I lean toward a Christmas lay out of crudités, antipasto, gluten free artisan crackers, a miriad of olives, specialty cheese and freshly made sliced chicken, pork tenderloin or some such. It couldn’t be better. Ok, maybe handmade mini quiches and bellinis could be added. ;o) ….. ok, now I’m hungry. YOU FAULT!

  5. My favourite was always mama’s homemade bread pudding. Always from scratch and raisins included – hot from the oven, dripping with a wee bit of butter melting all over it. Healthy? Of course not! Health food seldom is. But nothing ever tasted as wonderful as that … and because mama made it from scratch, with a pinch of this and a dab of that, not one of us has her recipe nor found any that even comes close … and trust me, we’ve tried them all. lol

  6. I loved those crackers as a kid! Such a wonderful memory. Thanks Charlie.

Also, I was wondering if you knew when DaVinci was going to ship the dot cards. I haven’t received mine yet. I also haven’t received the silver palette with brush or the Nomad palette from Cheap Joes. I received the 10 favorites dot card from Cheap Joes. It was so much fun and so exciting to win things from the sponsors. I appreciate all that you do and have done for this group. It was such a wonderful surprise that the sponsors were so generous with their products.Thank you for checking into this for me!

  7. I’m with you on not liking the processed crap. And cheese is my favorite food and I am definitely a cheese snob! So many great options out there. Hmmm a beautiful fruit and cheese board sounds like a great challenge to paint soon.

  8. Ooh, the nostalgia is coursing! The ones I used to have came with mini breadsticks instead of crackers (you’d always end up with loads of unloved sticks). I’m sure it is just nostalgia, though I do like the idea of a ‘sophisticated’ version if only to see if it feels sophisticated!

  9. Oh, my. No, Charlie. Just say no to the plastic-spreadable cheeses. 😀 😀 😀

(My husband, I am loathe to admit, has a predilection for those spray cheeses IN A CAN. I don’t understand. I don’t *want* to understand. EW. Just..>EEEW.) 😀

But I, for one, am glad you’re a foodie, because it means you draw things I then want to eat.

    Plastic-bubble cheese nonwithstanding.
