Day 30 - World Watercolor Month Exotic Location Coconut - Doodlewash

Day 30 – #WorldWatercolorMonth – Exotic Location

When it comes to exotic locations, our prompt for today, it’s really all a matter of perspective. Exotic simply means “originating in or characteristic of a distant foreign country.” So, what seems exotic to one person in one country, might seem perfectly commonplace to someone else. For me, as an example, exotic is anywhere that has coconuts growing, since I only see them at the supermarket. Once, years ago, I was staying in a small house on the island of Vieques near Puerto Rico. A fresh coconut was chopped for us to enjoy and it was the most delicious coconut I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve actually never had one served to me like that since, so it still ranks as one of my more exotic experiences. Sometimes the rarest things become the most memorable. That’s why I love World Watercolor Month, which happens only once a year, and unites thousands of artists around the globe in the celebration of watercolor. We’ve almost come to the close of this year’s event and I hope you’ve been enjoying it as much as I have!

Today, I have 20 more 5×7″ samples of Winsor & Newton professional watercolor paper paired with a professional watercolor 6 color dot card to give away. So hopefully everyone who wants one can get one! This is only open to residents of U.S./Canada and only to people who haven’t been told they’re receiving one yet. If you’d like to receive these, simply let me know you want them by adding the comment “I love Winsor & Newton!” while you comment below. The first 20 eligible folks to do so will receive one! (please watch for my comment back to you confirming, as I’ll give you a link to my contact form to send me your address!). There’s just one day left of World Watercolor Month, so if you haven’t yet, please consider making a donation to The Dreaming Zebra Foundation or do so by purchasing souvenirs in our shop, where 100% of proceeds go to Dreaming Zebra (these items will totally disappear on August 1st (yep, seriously, in less than 48 hours they’ll be gone forever!), so get yours now!)

For some parts of the world, it’s already the last day of World Watercolor Month, so thanks so much for your participation in this year’s event. I hope you had a fabulous time. Doodlewash has monthly art challenges all year long, so if you don’t feel like stopping, and I truly hope you don’t, please continue to join us all year! I’ve been painting daily for 3 years and nearly one full month now, and I can’t imagine stopping. If nothing else, I provide living proof, that no matter how busy your life may seem, there’s always a little bit of time you can carve out to make art. Whether your art is painting, drawing, sculpture, writing, or something else entirely, I hope you’ll always show up to make it. Creating new things is a gift that we all have, should we choose to accept it. We are all born with a natural ability to create. The trick is reconnecting with that ability as adults. As you read the artist’s stories on Doodlewash, you’ll quickly see the common theme. It’s not about learning to do something new, it’s about rediscovering the talent you’ve possessed since childhood. So, join us as we venture off with pen, pencil and paintbrush in hand to explore our own creativity each day. In the end, that’s where you’ll truly discover and enjoy a most fascinating and exotic location.

  1. Charlie, every day when I go to your site it feels like a mix of a museum visit and an art class. I mean that in the best possible way. It’s always such a delight to see the diversity on your site — by you and all the guest artists. Thank you so much.

  2. In a way, WWM has been an exotic location for some – those who’ve never tried painting every day for a month. It’s a change of perspective that makes the familiar seem new. It’s been a whirlwind of a month! Here’s to coconuts and watercolor!

  3. I’m not sure that Benjamin qualifies and he can not type, so I will do it for him. I love Winsor & Newton! If he is not eligible, that is okay too! You never know unless you try. Thank-you!

    1. Thanks, Kerfe! 😃💕 That first fresh coconut is the most amazing thing ever, isn’t it? And thanks… I’m thrilled that World Watercolor Month has grown so much. It’s delightful to see all the amazing work that people create!

  4. I received my W&N samples in the mail today. Thank you! I never had a fresh coconut. All my exotic travel has been north of the coconut line. My father hated it when we kids would insist that we had to watch Gilligan’s Island, but I remember that they had plenty of coconuts there. And you could make telephones and stuff out of them!😁 I think I’m missing out on something incredible.

    1. Yay! Thrilled you received your samples, Lisa! 😃💕 And I totally thought I would end up mentioning Gilligan’s Island in this post! LOL Loved that show! They could make anything!! Inspiring to be sure!

  5. Lovely rendition of the coconut. When I was a child, my dad would pound an ice pick into the coconut, drain out the liquid for us to drink, split the coconut with a hammer, and then cut out the flesh for us to eat. It was yummy! I don’t think I’ve had fresh coconut since then.

  6. Charlie your coconut is beautiful. Thank you for the watercolour challenge. I loved seeing all the gorgeous Watercolours! I LOVE WINSOR AND NEWTON!

  7. Hi Charlie, I enjoy seeing your watercolours throughout the year; this lovely one included. 🙂 I’ve just shared my final watercolour of this challenge! As I’ve thanked you on that post, and shared links to your site (which I have done throughout this exciting event) thought I’d come over, and say this to you here. Thank you for organising this wonderful challenge, I’ve really enjoyed it! Cheerio, Janette

  8. That coconut looks good enough to eat. I agree, a fresh coconut is so delicious and exotic. Congratulations on your 3rd wonderful year of World Watercolor Month. It’s a great place you have created. Thank you.

  9. “it’s really all a matter of perspective.”

If everyone could keep that in mind, there would be no war!

BTW, both paintings (the wildflowers and the sloth have arrived.
They are even more splendid ‘in person’. Many thanks for all you
    do!

    1. I wish people could remember that… the world would be so much nicer without war. 😉 And thrilled you enjoyed your prints!! Thank you SO much for your support and encouragement. It truly means so much to me to know you enjoy my art! 💕
