With just one one more doodlewash to go before the end of the World Watercolor Month challenge, I decided to share a slice of cake. I once again, am not lucky enough to have this sitting in front of me, but I really wanted cake, so I figured I’d manifest a slice in a watercolor sketch. I believe this would be referred to as a Black Forest Cake if it had actually been baked. Though I typically prefer white cake, this was an interesting challenge in just Burnt Sienna, Gamboge, Pyrrol Red and Ultramarine Blue. It’s kind of amazing how few colors it really takes to get the point across and I’ve been loving using limited palettes all month and can’t seem to stop. But now, I just really wish I had some cake and feel a little cheated this is only another painted dream.
Cake is something I simply can’t refuse. If it’s ever available at a party or family gathering, you can rest assured I’ll be having a slice. When I’m in America, the icing is too sugary sweet for me though, and I’ll often scrape some of it to the side. I’m still not sure why Americans love the taste of sugar so much that they want to taste only sugar and nothing else. Once, at a family gathering, I bit into frosting with so much sugar it was almost crunchy and the first bite made my face hurt. Another time, someone brought gooey cake butter cake which was invented in my home state of Missouri entirely by accident when a German baker reversed the proportions of butter and flour. What they don’t mention is that it was also made by putting in way too much sugar. Apparently this particular baker should have instead shared the amazing drink he was having and left the baking to others more capable.
All this said, I’m also enjoying an amazing drink so I won’t judge and will keep this post short. Instead, I’ll just say, hope you all are having an amazing weekend! If you’re on the mailing list, you’ve already heard about the August Adventure, but if not, I’ll be announcing it here tomorrow. So excited to keep painting with all of you next month! And if it were possible, I would definitely have you all over for a piece of cake!

The first post that pops up in my reader this evening! Yum! Luckily I’m full from dinner. But thanks for the virtual dessert. (K)
Hehe! You’re so welcome, Kerfe! 😃💕Glad you liked it!
What a fab looking slice of cake Charlie, it’s so full of Black Forest Gateaux-ness. I’m such a huge cake fan, this is right up my street 😊
Awesome!! Glad you’re a cake fab as well!! Thanks, Phil! 😃
I AM having cake tonight because it’s my birthday! 🙂 Beautiful sketch…. you’re created such wonderful textures, especially in that fork!
Awww thanks! Glad you liked this one! 😃 And Happy Birthday!! Hope it’s been an amazing one!!
Oh, and I meant to include… the German style of cheesecake is much less sweet than NY style. It takes mostly of cheese rather than sugar. I prefer it by far.
I agree! I just wanted to taste the other ingredients! lol If it’s too sweet it just kills it.
Oh goodness gracious – I so sound like a broken record – but Oh Charlie O! This is the most amazing doodlewash of cake I’ve ever seen. I just don’t know how you create such amazing work every single day! Are you ignoring my request for a video tutorial?! PLEASE! Pretty please black forest cake with a cherry on top! 🙂
Awww Jodi you’re too sweet! Thanks! 😃💕 and I do want to try a video at some point, but have such precious little time lately. (Okay…also a bit of stage fright! I have to admit. 😊😊) One day…I promise!!
Oh please don’t be shy! I can’t wait!
Well… there’s also the complete lack of time thing… I’ll have to find a way to squeeze it in!
Oh pish posh! Time shmine! We all have the same amount! 🙂
Haha! You’re not going to rest until you get that video I see. 😉lol
Yep! 🙂
Heehee…you’re too funny! And seriously, your food paintings are just super awesome! <3 Like with the tea doodlewash yesterday, I have a hard time convincing my brain that I can't reach into the screen and grab that. 😀 I usually halve the sugar in the things I bake and never miss it.
I feel like I should make a Black Forest cake now…darn it…
Thanks, Teresa! 😃💕Glad you like them! I love food so much it’s a wonder I’m not fat. 😊hehe… guess just painting desserts is pretty low calorie though. Lol
This looks so delish, I’m having a tough time not rushing out to buy a cake. Too hot to make one, but I’d sure love some cake. You can give me your “extra” frosting, Charlie. A sweet painting, natch.
Thanks, Sharon!! 😃💕Yeah…cake is not kitchen friendly this time of year. Way too warm. But I’ll happily give you my extra frosting!! Hehe
Delicious Charlie, I love cake!
Thanks Sharon!! 😃💕Cake is sooo good…I’m desperately wanting some!! Hehe😊
I cannot refuse cake! Very nice!
Hehe! Thanks, KB! 😃💕Glad you liked this!
I’m not a big sugar fan but your cake looks delish, Charlie! 💕🍰😃 Awesome Doodlewash !!!
Thanks Jill! 😃💕 I feel sugar just enhance flavor and not actually BE the flavor…like salt! Hehe Glad you liked my doodlewash version!
Well dang, now I want a piece of cake and it’s time for bed. A glass of milk and a piece of of cake. I know what I will be craving!! Awesome doodlewash.
Hehe…thanks, Susan! 😃💕I want some too!!! It’s ridiculous torture! Painting it satisfies none of my cravings at all. Lol I’m going to find some today!!
LOL good luck!!
Yes, Cake!! As Sharon says, a ‘sweet’ painting 😝 You’re improving all the time, Charlie. I can’t wait to see what the August adventure is (why am I not on the mailing list?😱) Oh, and I also halve the sugar in most recipes…
Thanks so much, Marina! 😃💕And I just posted the new adventure on the site. This is the main mailing list: http://eepurl.com/b43NML (not sure if you’re on it or not!) But yes to halfing the sugar!! We do the same!! hehe… way to sweet otherwise!
Hmm yummy!!! I will not refuse your invitation for a cake as long is not too much sugar! 😉 I am very excited for August Adventure I just finished to read your newsletter! Is going to be fun! Great idea you had Charlie! 😉 <3
Thanks so much, Carolina! 😃💕 And yay! So glad you’ll be joining for the August adventure! It’s not the crazy 31 day challenge, unless people want to try that! hehe… just play when you like!
Another delicious doodlewash, Charlie! Makes my mouth watering and craving for cake today!!!
hehe! Thanks, Carsten!😃 I want cake too!! Still haven’t managed to have it in real life! Lol
Golly gosh Charlie you have knocked this recipie upto perfection, the fork, the reflection, the crumbly bits of cake in so much detail, oh and the cream….edible ….seriously have you thought about illustrating for a cook book? You are no1 at food stuff, this could now be my fav, and not just because it looks scrummy yummy ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Awww thanks so much, Rebecca! 😃💕 I’ve thought about doing a lot of things, but darn it if there just isn’t enough time in the day. I hope to try a bigger project one day though. Hopefully before I’m retired! Hehe
A big cake is in order to celebrate this watercolor month. Although color pencils and markers are my medium I thouroughly enjoyed seeing you and your inspired follower creating so much wonderful art! Thank you for great blog! Cheers from Ohio, Johanna. Ps I agree, Americans have a too sweet tooth ;o)
Thanks so much, Johanna! 😃💕Glad you enjoyed seeing all the fabulous art from around the world this month! I have too… it was so inspiring, no matter your medium!
Beautiful work once again……yup this is your sweet spot!!
hehe… I love food!!! Lol Oh… and painting it as well! 😊Thanks so much, Laura! 😃💕 And I kept your prompts alive for the August adventure as “anytime” prompts because I love them and I’m not done playing through them yet! hehe 😉
Cheers Charlie, it was a awesome month!! such nice new friends, and awesome art! this group is a delight!
Awww… so thrilled to hear that Edo! I’m so happy you shared your work daily. You’re truly an inspiration to the group!! 😃
I don’t know what it is about your foodlewashses or how it’s done but they always look better than the real thing! That is if that’s even possible… I didn’t used to think so. Ugh, the cravings are torturous, especially for someone with no cake in the house.
Who isn’t a cake fan? Even I’m a cake fan, Charlie! 😉 Though, I’m like that with the icing too, actually – I sometimes find it is too much. I much prefer the cakey bit of the cake – and this looks especially delectable here. Mmm!
Thanks Jacob! 😃 Yes… if you didn’t like cake, our friendship would have to be terminated immediately! hehe… seriously… who couldn’t love cake! I just wish i actually had some. I’m torturing myself as well with these. Ugh… I need some now!!!
Mmmm… Blackforest Gateau! There’s something I haven’t had for a while. Charlie, look at what you’ve done now! I have to go hunt one down…! Super painting, by the way.
Thanks so much, Tom! 😃 Yeah… I haven’t had this in ages! I had to use a photo reference and now it’s all I can think about! Lol I need to fix that soon and get the real deal!
Don’t blame you. I’m off to eat something now, in fact…!
Ive got dibs on the fork! Gorgeous cake!
Lol…we might be fighting over the fork…I really love cake! 😊Thanks so much, Jade!
