Written by When it comes to movies, my favorite is the one that’s served with a bowl of popcorn. I’ve enjoyed movies without this treat, of course, but they just don’t compare. We don’t make it out to the movie theatre very often. Unless it’s a huge spectacle that actually requires a large screen, we simply prefer to watch movies at home, away from crowds. Also, our popcorn is a much lighter variety, air-popped and lightly salted with a drizzle of olive oil. Admittedly, some of my favorite movies are animated. I’m still a big kid and sucker for a good Disney or Pixar movie. Though, admittedly, Disney seems to be reproducing everything they’ve ever made in live action now while Pixar makes sequels, but they have still created some of my favorite movies of all time. I think, Ratatouille would be at the top of the list. Barring the gross notion of rats in a kitchen, the uplifting message of “anyone can cook” is lovely. I’ve never given cooking serious attention to see if this is true, but I do strongly believe that “anyone can paint” so it’s a message that really resonates with me.
Perhaps my penchant for animated films is the same reason I also enjoy romantic comedies. I love happy endings. I’m impossibly optimistic, so I actually believe that these endings are more reflective of real life. There’s always something good to be found, even in the toughest of circumstances, if you simply allow yourself to see it. There’s that moment towards the end of every story, where the main character hits the lowest point. That place where all is lost and nothing seems like it going to work out. Then, suddenly, things change for the better and the hero ultimately get the very thing he always wanted. Okay, maybe in real life, there aren’t people breaking into song like a Disney musical, but honestly, how cool would that be? Either way, I believe that people have loved these stories for years, not because they’re a fantasy, but because at some point in our life, we’ve experienced the same thing. There was that moment when nothing seemed to work and then suddenly, everything changed for the better.
Maybe every low moment doesn’t have a perfect movie ending, but with just a little bit of creative thinking, it can always turn into something good again. At least, that’s what all those Disney movies I watched growing up taught me. When I first started painting, I was so excited and yet some days, felt like I had no real talent at all. But I knew, that if I just kept practicing things would change for the better. That even at my lowest point, my story would have a happy ending. And you’ll find every little painting I’ve ever made, right here on Doodlewash. I didn’t hide anything from you. Even if I thought it was rubbish, I posted it anyway. A great story has low moments and high moments. Not everything that happens is good, but good always triumphs over bad. Well, at least in the stories I prefer to tell, and the ones I prefer to watch, when I grab some popcorn to enjoy my favorite movie.

OK, I have GOT to paint some popcorn soon! You’re two ahead of me, lol. I culled some photos of popcorn months ago then got distracted by some other idea, probably a fruit or veggie, lol. I love all the interesting shapes, great writing today, I totally agree with you on all of that good over evil, even though sometimes you have to take the long view. I am still reading your posts and those of your guests as we move into August! This World of Watercolor is sucking me in – a tiny toe at a time! I got lucky and was given a huge stash of Daniel Smith watercolor paint tubes! My washes are looking really lovely!! Even if I never get beyond those, I think I’ll feel like an artist!

This popcorn looks sooo good! And your talk of Disney and Pixar films made me think of Rex for the first time in quite a while. <3 I still love Doodlewash Rex! I like the philosophy here and totally agree, though indeed it's probably a happy ending for everyone else that I don't go around singing.

Yes, eighteen months or so isn’t it – crazy. I do remember that series being fun; we had Rex, Benji, and that awful Oozinator advert which I’m incredulous at once more!

Ratatouille is a fantastic movie! My favourite movie is also a Pixar film, I love the movie Up. Have you seen it? I don’t know if you ever painted the house floating with the balloons, but I think that would look amazing as a watercolour.

Fantastic artwork as always. I tend to prefer watching movies in the comfort of my own home as well, the other half on the other hand has a habit of falling asleep mid-movie so the cinema is the better choice if he actually wants to make it to the end.

I’ve always loved my popcorn with lots of salt and melted butter and cheddar cheese! Now that I think about it, just about anything is better with lots of salt and melted butter and cheddar cheese. I really like the line drawings you do with the sepia ink. It just feels so much softer/natural than black ink line and wash paintings. I want to try this out, but have hesitated to trust myself with an actual bottle of ink. Do you have to worry about this ink drying up in your pen?
Thanks so much, Lisa! 😃💕 True… melted butter and cheese tends to make anything awesome!! And yeah, I tend to prefer sepia as well lately. I jump back to black with glass and things less organic, but sepia has a lovely soft effect. I haven’t had an issue with the Carbon Platinum ink in my Lamy pens drying up, but then again, I use them every day so that probably makes a difference!
