Doodlewash Turning Two in July!

Not only is July the biggest global watercolor event of the year, but it’s also the anniversary of the beginning of that little blog that started almost two years ago called Doodlewash. Today’s final prompt for June was fireworks, so I’ve pictured fire and some cake. Trust me, the fireworks are happening internally, as I’m so excited to see all of the amazing watercolors created during World Watercolor Month! Please, please, hashtag every watercolor you make on social media during July with #WorldWatercolorMonth so we can build the most amazing social gallery ever together! You don’t have to be participating in the challenge, just use the hashtag whenever you post your watercolor art and join the celebration! July 3rd is actually the official date of the Doodlewash birthday, but I’m celebrating early because I’m so happy with everything we’ve made happen together in just two short years. And even more excited that we did it as a group! Doodlewash isn’t about me, it’s always been and continues to be about all of you. I promise to keep creating awesome new things for us, and I hope you’ll continue to join me for the adventure! Much love to you all!

I was sent my three favorite colors by one of our awesome World Watercolor Month sponsors, Da Vinci Paint Co., and though one should probably make swatches when trying a paint for the first time, I just dove right in and made a quick little doodlewash using only the three colors they sent. I love the vibrancy in color! I didn’t have time for multiple washes as this is an incredibly fast sketch, yet the color came out bold like I prefer on the first pass. It was fun to jump in and try something without thinking too much about things. That’s how I started my little art journey. Just a lot of enthusiasm and excitement and a drive to simply “DO” whatever I felt like doing. Less than two years, when I post something today, there are a lot more people judging it. I get less likes if I do something too quickly and fewer comments, or occasionally even a “you can do better” comment. A part of me was worried and thought, I need to really carve out more time and make sure I create something stellar. The original part of me, the one that started this blog, said, “screw it!” I’ve never been one to make masterpieces. I just paint what’s in my head and in my heart. This is something that we all should do first and foremost. If a masterpiece appears, all the better! But it should never be the goal.

As we move into July and celebrate this amazing medium, I hope each of you will paint from the heart and share it with the world. We can be really tough critics of ourselves, but I’ve found that there is always someone out there who will love what you make. And that someone’s life was made special in that moment. And you, dear artist, made that happen. That’s an incredible thought, when you really stop and think about it. Even if you made something that the masses didn’t seem to love, there is always someone who loves it just as much as you did. That’s why I created a new community to bring us even closer together. Art can be a very discouraging journey as much as it can be rewarding. It’s tough to create each day and make something new. But together, I’m confident we can raise each other up to new heights. We can make a positive difference in the world and stay motivated no matter what each new day brings. Yeah, it’s a pretty grand and lofty plan that sounds almost impossible to achieve. But, that’s the beauty of the possibility and wonder you always tend to believe in, when you’re only two years old.
