Today, it’s time to celebrate the doughnut, or donut, and enjoy a little taste of deep-fried goodness. The exact origin of this little treat is widely disputed, with many coming forward with a story on how they were invented. One of the earliest written references to a doughnut came in 1809 when Washington Irving poetically described them as “balls of sweetened dough, fried in hog’s fat.” Yeah, doughnuts are not for those hoping to fit into this year’s latest fashions, but are instead, for the rest of us, who know a damn good treat when we taste one. Like all decadent desserts, doughnuts are loaded with calories and happily devoid of any actual nutritional value. It’s a food created simply for the pleasure of eating it and that’s definitely something worth celebrating.
A new little doughnut shop opened here that sells little miniature one that you can get covered in various custom toppings, including Pop Rocks, a carbonated candy that explodes in your mouth. Being a child of the 70’s when this candy was first introduced into the marketplace, I of course had to try this version, which ended up being just as delightfully silly as it sounds. But despite all the “gourmet” offerings of doughnuts one can find these days, I still love the simplest versions best. Just a simple glazed donut or a cake donut with a bit of frosting and some sprinkles is all I really need. One of my favorites is a Long John, a doughnut shaped like an éclair, which is often filled with a white frosting known only as “fluff.” It’s delicious, and I mentioned it in a previous post when I discussed my search for my favorite childhood pink donut.
There’s really not much more I have to say about doughnuts, as this is my second post dedicated to this culinary delight. And since it’s the weekend, I’m going to stop this post here and head to grab a glass of wine. Doughnuts don’t pair particularly well with wine, so I’ll simply be celebrating with this little doodlewash. Though, if you love doughnuts, you have a wonderful excuse to run out right this minute and buy some! Yay!

As a child i also loved Doughnuts, freshly baked with strawberry jam squirted into the middle, or just plain. Must say I cannot recall when I last ate one though! Lovely drawing Charlie!
Thanks, Di! 😃💕 Yum!! Love the kind with jam in the middle… so good! Yeah… they’re a pretty rare treat for me. I can’t metabolize them like I could when I was a kid! 😊 hehe

Gorgeous Doodlewash of a totally decadent dessert that is entirely off my diet. I also love cake doughnuts best, chocolate with chocolate frosting, but haven’t had one for many months. Trying to keep it that way. So I’m just going to enjoy your painting and pretend I don’t like the taste anyway.
But I do, I do like the taste, dammit, I do love doughnuts. Ack! Heaven in a heart attack. Ack ack ack!
When it is going to be National Celery Stick Day?
Thanks, Sharon! 😃💕 Haha! I feel the same… really shouldn’t eat them and want to believe I’d like something else, but NO! Doughnuts, please!! hehe Carrots, peppers and celery coming this week! lol
They are mouth watering 🍩😋 Great work again Charlie 😍
Awww thanks so much, Snehal! 😃💕
