This is the first time in my life that I’ve ever painted an eggplant, or aubergine depending on your preference. It’s a shiny, rather odd food that is used as a vegetable, but is actually a fruit, or more specifically a berry. A really, really, big berry. I’ve previously covered this topic when discussing bananas, but it’s funny how many foods are often mislabeled. I rather love thinking of eggplant as this incredibly giant berry. It makes it rather cool, like you’ve found something amazing and unique. Indeed, I’m a fan of eating eggplant as well, and my favorite preparation by far is in the form of ratatouille. It’s not a food that makes the grocery list every week, but I do appreciate it when it appears. As a kid, of course, I favored Eggplant Parmesan, which, like anything completely buried in cheese, is absolutely delicious!
I’ve been enjoying a rather slow day today of relaxation that I now realize I probably needed. After weeks of burning my candle at both ends as they say, whoever they are, it was a lovely change to actually take a bit of a break. Now, fully rejuvenated, I’m ready to go back to being crazy again and doing too many things at once which still seems to suit me best in the end. I feel a bit lost if I’ve not driving toward some goal of making something happen. I’m not sure if this makes be driven or insane, but as we’ve learned from eggplants, classifications are often difficult to pinpoint. What matters most to me is always striving to do the things that make me happy and not get too bogged down in the things that don’t. And I hope as the holidays approach and I get of bit of extra time off work, I’ll be able to try some of the things I’ve been wanting to do next.
I’m wanting to play a bit and experiment a bit with my sketching and painting. To try to stylize things more or just take a break to play with toned paper. Though I can always manage to show up each day with a little illustration and story, I’m often moving so fast I can barely remember what just happened. In some ways, this has proven to be a viable technique. If I’m going full speed ahead, it’s simply not possible to second guess myself or worry about what it is I’m making. That’s a rather freeing thing indeed. When I have a bit more time, I tend to fuss over things and the result is often less appealing. Sometimes, I step back to wonder what kind of artist I might be, and think of myself as more of an illustrator than a painter. But, then I realize that it really doesn’t matter if whatever I’m doing is done with a bit of joy. And at other times, I rather think I have a bit in common with that big berry that looks like a vegetable, and, in the end, doesn’t know or care whether it’s eggplant, or aubergine.

Beautiful. You have the gift of creating “shine.” Goes with your shiny personality.
Aww that’s so sweet of you to say! Thanks, Ann! 😃💕
Agree
If not joy then at the very least contentment or gratitude.
Lovely post and water-color to match
Aww thanks so much, Judith! 😃💕
Beautiful shine
Thanks so much, Pamela! 😃💕
Who but you could make a gem out of an eggplant. Well, call it an aubergine and already its status has risen. Cover it with cheese and it’s ambrosia. What a beautiful range of purples and greens you managed. Can’t wait to see what you create when you start to experiment.
Thanks so much, Sharon! 😃💕 hehe… yeah, eggplant is an interesting thing indeed… I honestly had no idea how to capture the color so I just splashed a few around and hoped for the best!
Nice colours!
Thanks so much, John! 😃💕
I call them eggplant, but rather prefer aubergine which is so much more interesting as a word, and the name of a color.
I agree… aubergine is a far cooler word! hehe 😃💕
As always, a great painting! As for classifications and their relation to truth – one man’s eggplant is another man’s moussaka!
Haha!! Yes to that Sandra!! 😃💕
You really did get the sheen on the aubergine’s skin. Really fabulous sketch Charlie!
Thanks so much, Louise! 😃💕 Glad you liked it!
Ha, we seem to be on the same wavelength. I spent the entire day reading. What a lovely break. Tomorrow starts a new week with a new giveaway and lots of projects that are half done. Today though was magical. the only thing that could have made it better was a window seat, marshmallows in hot chocolate and a rainstorm. :o)
Awww that sounds like a perfectly lovely day indeed! 😃💕 Yeah… I have the same with all the half done projects… hehe… I’m sure they’ll all get done when they’re ready to!
Wonderful….Hey would u plz tell me how much time does it take to paint such amazing things per day….??..Cz it takes a lot of time for me..:)
Thanks so much! 😃💕 I never spend more than an hour on painting and usually just about 30 minutes. If you zoom in… you can see what I mean! hehe… I tend to splash about and do about 3 layers just to create an illusion of realism. It’s fun and doesn’t take as much time as actual realism. 😉
Hoho….that’s amazing…!!!
Beautiful!
Thanks so much, Hans! 😃💕
Beautiful aubergines – another favorite plant of mine for painting. I still cannot post my artwork on Doodlewash because of technical problems. The only way to share my artwork is by referring you on my blog post with aubergines: https://violetad.com/2016/05/13/planting-and-painting/
Thanks, Violeta! 😃💕 And beautifully done! Yeah, I hope the gallery problems get sorted soon… ugh… but definitely use the little image icon in the lower right of the post box in the community as that one should still work to share work! 😉
Lovely as usual!
Aww thanks so much! 😃💕
What a gorgeous painting, you made, Charlie! The color is fantastic and of course you captured the sheen perfectly. I completely agree with a.filmer’s comment that your ability to paint shine is a reflection (hahaha!) of your personality.
Thanks so much, Ellie! 😃💕 hehe… that’s sweet of you. I don’t know what it is, but shiny things are my favorite!! lol
Lovely gigantic berries Charlie! lol I didn’t know this before now. Beautiful shapes and shine.
Thanks so much, Tom! Glad ya liked it! 😃💕
Beautiful shades , here this is known as a
Vegetables and tasty. First time came to
Know gigantic Berri’s Charlie. Thanks so much.
Thanks, Snehlata! 😃💕 Yeah, you can always count on my posts to often contain weird random facts! lol
Ooooh, lookit that giant berry! So purply good, and shiny.
hehe! Thanks so much, Susan! 😃💕
Mmmm, well seasoned eggplant is so yummy. I recently made eggplant ‘meatballs’ and they were fantastic. Paired with a homemade marinara, mozzarella pearls, and lots of basil, they tasted like eggplant parm with no oil and more flavor. I have too admit to myself now that I follow up on your full posts, half for artistic interest and half for recipe inspiration! 😉
hehe.. Yay! Well… Philippe gets credit for any recipe inspiration usually as I don’t cook a thing. lol But yum to eggplant ‘meatballs’… that sounds amazing!! 😃💕
I didn’t know that eggplants were actually big berries. Which make that eggplant bacon recipe I found even more bizarre. 😛 I love the way you painted your eggplants. They look beautiful.
hehe… thanks, Sandra! 😃💕 Yep… you can rename it Bacon and Berries! lol
Lol, actually the recipe is to turn your eggplant into a vegan bacon substitute, which would make it a big berry bacon substitute. Not sure my husband is going to be happy with that idea. 😄
Gorgeous color!
Thanks so much! 😃💕
