It’s a three day weekend here in the States and since we don’t have any travel plans, we decided to have a Staycation and celebrate it with a lovely Spritz at lunch. It was so orange that it almost glowed, so I knew I simply had to doodlewash it. This Spritz had a bit of Prosecco, soda water, and an Italian aperitif called Aperol that is an odd mixture of bitter orange, gentian, rhubarb, cinchona and “other ingredients” that are apparently too secret to name. Despite its mysterious contents, it was delicious and a perfect way to start a long weekend. Though I did resist the urge to have a second one at lunch, I’ll likely be enjoying another one of these charming elixirs this evening if the hunt we’re about to embark on for the ingredients proves successful.

I love the concept of a Staycation because it doesn’t involve any of the stress of actual travel. It’s the type of vacation that comes with no real rules and you are essentially free to do whatever you like. Truth be told, I enjoy treating every weekend like a little Staycation and take time to do all the things the busy work week wouldn’t allow me to do. Like be generally lazy without regrets or apologies. That’s how I’m feeling today. Perhaps it’s the wonderful orange drink or perhaps it’s just a long needed time to rest and relax. So, I’m going to keep this post short and head out in search of some of those “other ingredients” to keep this little Staycation going. I hope all of you are making time for a little bit of fun this weekend. As for me, I’m off in search of a Spritz!

  1. Ha….staycation! Love that term, never ever heard of it, did you come up with that one? you must have, you are quite witty 🙂 That drink sounds so good, now I want one because you sure made it look good, I love anything orange, darn good color. I do believe that I have used my “good” quota for today 🙂

    1. Hehe… I wish I could take credit for it, but it’s a term that’s been around for awhile. Not sure who came up with it, but these types of “vacations” became popular when the recession hit! And thanks! 😃💕 You should definitely try this drink… it’s so good… and low in alcohol so it’s kind of guilt free! Lol

  2. Staycations are great any day of the week. My hubby is off work every other Wednesday but has to work Saturday mornings on those weeks, so many of our Wednesdays feel like tiny Staycations, especially ones when we don’t have errands to run. Your bright orange adult beverage is the finishing touch. I am glad to hear that you are relaxing and enjoying because you usually seem like one very busy guy. Cheers to you and Phillipe! 🍹🍷

  3. Blimey, you got the glow alright – this looks dangerously attractive! What a great way to mark the long weekend. Sounds like you have a wise plan of attack too – I didn’t think you knew how to be lazy! 😉 Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

  4. So happy to hear you get some time to relax, Charlie!! 😍👍 And stay vacations are the best!! 🌟🌈 I should have done the same… My hubby and I went for a hike in the mountains and I fell and sprained my left foot. Luckily, it isn’t broke after a trip to the ER but it hurts like HELL so I’m drinking lots of wine and trying to remember why I didn’t just stay home and take a nap! Lol! 😳

  5. Staycation, a short vacation? Aperol, looks special, I have never tried it, yesterday I could have because we had dinner in a good Italian restaurant here. This for the next time.

I thought you were on your way to Paris, no?

Your Doodlewash looks attractive fresh, does it taste bitter as well Charlie?

  6. Mmm, Aperol… Reminds me of Italy. Perhaps a bit early in the morning for one here, but happy to know that you’re having one on our behalf. Lovely sketch too, the colour is just right! 🙂

  7. Thanks for all your posts Charlie – I just joined and am enjoying them so much. Enjoy your staycation and that drink looks very refreshing! Sharon

  8. Dear Charlie, the sketch is great!
There is an evolution in the recipe of Spritz: use larger goblet; ice, add dry Italian sparkling wine (which is better than the Prosecco wine), soda water, “Aperol” and a half slice of round, sweet, juicy orange fruit, . The name of this version of the Spritz is “Sprizzone” which means bigger Spritz. Enjoy it all! Best, Edoardo

  9. Thanks for your post, I really enjoyed this. Am a huge fan of Aperol Spritz and we are embarking on our very first Staycation during Spring Break this year so could relate to it! I have just started a poetry blog here on WordPress in case you have time to look? Wishing you a good day, Sam 🙂
