The hands down most suggested bird was a Flamingo for today’s doodlewash and entry into Draw A Bird Day (hosted this month by Kerfe and Nina at Method Two Madness on behalf of Laura at Create Art Everyday). I decided to try this one fast and loose and limit the palette to just three main colors. I also had precious little time to paint today, so this was really my only option.
Flamingos have rather tiny eyes, so getting an expression was a bit tough. I prefer things with larger eyes, but it was fun to play with brighter colors. Had I more time, this one would be standing in water, but I purposely cropped that bit and just focused on the bird instead. Flamingo comes from the Spanish word flamenco, “with the colour of flame”, or colloquially just meaning “cocky” which I guess you can be when you are this incredibly colorful.
I started this little project thinking that I’d leave it open to anything, but I’m rather liking animals, birds and reptiles, so I think I’ll stick to this for the month. Though I suppose an insect or two isn’t out of the question. Perhaps it’s simplest to just say, I’m going to try to stick to living things for the month. So “G” is up next, and if you have a suggestion of a living thing to fit this letter, please let me know in the comments!

Very nice
Thanks!! Appreciate it!! 😃
The color is fabulous! Nice!
Thanks Carmel!! It was fun to play with some new colors! Hehe
Flamboyant flamingo! <3 And you even managed to make it smile despite its "frown"! 😀
Yeah…he’s pretty cocky! He thinks he’s hot. 😉lol Thanks Teresa!! 💕😃
Fabulous Flamingo, Charlie! Love that Opera Rose color, don’t you?! It really makes your bird sing! hehe! 😉 Gosh, the only animal for G that comes to mind is Gorilla. And I’m thinking you have done one of these? ;-0
Thanks Jill!! 💕😃 Yeah I love this color! People warn about the lack of lightfastness, but I don’t really care since I just sketch and move on! Lol And yeah…I did already do a gorilla. As close to a portrait as I’ve gotten recently! Lol 😊
Very beautiful and colourful flamingo !
I have a colony of flamingos nearby where I live but they’re way much paler (it has something to do with what they eat , it seems)
How about a gecko for tomorrow ?
Turtle Hugs 🙂
Thanks!!! That’s so cool to have flamingos nearby!! Yeah…I went for the super colorful ones. Didn’t know that about their diet. That’s interesting. And geckos are awesome! I almost sketched one of those previously and ended up doing a collared lizard because I’d stumbled across a few photos and they looked cool. 😊hehe
Yes! now I remember the collared lizard (my memory takes lots of holidays , you know 😉 ) . And I just suggested the gecko because I couldn’t remember any other by G
Turtle Hugs 🙂 🙂
It’s funny…I couldn’t remember any either and then people suggested Giraffe and I’m like…oh yeah!! Haha… Although X is going to be tougher if I stick with animals. 😊Still can’t think of anything there.
I believe you’ll come up with something or someone will suggest a great one , but I have Xerus , it’s a bit like a squirrel
🙂
That’s a good one! They’re super cute! Hehe
🙂
Their colors are so amazing. Good to have a bit of the tropics on this cold day! I’m going with giraffe. (K)
Thanks Kerfe!! It was fun to get Opera Rose in my stocking this Christmas. Hehe… And yay! Giraffe is something I’ve been wanting to try! We’ll see though… I never know what mood I’ll stay in and I’m so easily distracted. 😊lol
Me too. The best of intentions are often not good enough! Fun to be surprised anyway.
Great stuff Charlie, the colours are suitably scorching! That eye may be small but note the beady stare. It knows we’re jealous.
G is for Goat. Gazelle. Grasshopper. Giraffe. Golden Retriever.
Lol…thanks Jacob!! Yay! I was trying to get that bead eye to look cocky. Glad it worked! And great G list!! I would say it will definitely be one of those!! 😉👍🏻
Ooh! I know which my fingers are crossed for, we’ll have to see if its the one you choose! 😉 I was sure you’d already done a giraffe a few months ago, but it appears I imagined that.
gorgeous scarlets and pinks in your flamingo Charlie!!
Thanks Debi!! 😃💕I was dying to do something with bright color! Hehe…it’s funny how many animals are brownish.
that made me laugh! most are browns, cept birds, butterflies, snakes…. I do like browns, siennas, etc. but, they get repetitive for us!
Wow, these colors are superb, it just leaped off my screen, Charlie! Really lovely!! Hmm. Gopher. Groundhog. Gazelle. Gonzo the Great!! Good going!!!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜
Woooooooooooow! love this one Charlie! colors, loose style together turned out amazing! 💛💛
Thanks Snehal!! 💕😃 It was fun to go a little looser. Actually it’s my normal style but without having the time to worry the details! Hehe! So glad you liked it!
I love it! Those tiny eyes are hard to do, good job!
Thanks Catherine!! 💕😃 I was determined to get some sort of eye in… Even if it’s not what most people remember about a flamingo. Hehe
Knock your socks off color, Charlie. Beautiful painted and drawn Flamingo.
My G suggestion: Gila Monster.
Thanks Sharon!! 💕😃It was time to blast some color in my sketches! Hehe…I was getting a little too earthy lately. And nice suggestion! Had to google one to remind myself what they looked like. 😊
Love the colors and the composition. It just works perfect.
Awww thanks Teri!! What a wonderful compliment!! 😊💕😃
These are such happy, festive colors and make me instantly happy. Pretty, pretty, pretty!
Awww that makes me instantly happy to hear that!! Thanks Carol!! 💕😃
a FABULOUS flamingo! Oh Gee! You have so many great ideas for G already – I can’t wait to see – I’m secretly hoping fo giraffe… just sayin’…. 🙂
Thanks so much Jodi!! ❤️😃hehe.. Yeah it was weird because I hadn’t even thought of giraffe yet! Lol I’ve always wanted to try one so there’s a good chance that might be it. 😉
Ethereal!
Thanks so much Cindy!! 💕😃
A feast for the eyes, such luscious color. Beautifully drawn and painted.
Awww thanks Haunani!! 💕😃That’s so sweet of you to say. It was fun to play with these colors! Hehe
Gorgeous colours :-)! And beautiful drawing flow. I like the sepia ink. Did you use some black ink too (for the beak)? Nice little eye – he/she looks pensive when I look at the image at full size.
Thank Myriam!! 💕😃Glad you like him/her…hehe…I have no idea!! Hehe I just used sepia ink on this one. I used Neutral Tint and painted the beak and some lines of it in a few other places to add contrast.
Outstanding work! You always inspire me, particularly because you create such lovely shapes and forms, and you get great color saturation. Love, love, LOVE!
Awww thanks Sophia!! What a wonderful compliment! I’m so happy you like my work! 😃💕

Thanks Tori!! 💕😃Glad you liked this… He/she is rather flamboyant. It was fun to play with these colors.
He’s so cool! Love the personality and color in this one!
As for G animals, I’m gonna have to go with gecko. 🙂
Thanks Annie!! 💕😃I’m running behind on replies…hehe… Gecko would have been fun! But I ended up with something taller! Hehe
I love flamingos and this ones has the most wonderful vibrant range of pinks and reds 🙂
Thanks Nicola!! 💕😃I’m glad you liked this. They’re not colors I normally use so it made this one fun!
What a fun doodlewash! Really love the colors here. Kids are always fascinated by them. They wanted to feed them something other than shrimp so they would turn a different color.. Hehe.. My youngest loves blueberries and I always tell her she’s turning bluer each day.. 😊 I will check out your G entry later today!! Off to do more math planning! ❤️
Thanks Kari!! 💕😃And haha! Yeah…I didn’t realize that’s how they got their color until I read about them. The blueberry story reminds me of Willy Wonka! Lol G is live! Hope your math planning is going well!! ❤️
What a handsome flamingo! I too love your colorl palette, so bright, perfect I’d say.
Please excuse the floating “I” very mysterious!
Haha! I love a good mystery! 😉👍🏻
Awww thanks Cathe! 💕😃That’s so sweet!!
