Favorite ink and watercolor supplies

  • My most favorite  micron black ink pens, watercolor pencils, inktense pencils  derwent watercolor graphite pencils, shading pencil

    Tell us more!

I like to draw with a pencil. Graphite is one of the types of art medium that requires extra care when drawing or sketching with it. When it gets in contact with your hand, paper, or any other tools and objects, graphite can easily smudge, and in turn, can be pretty challenging to fix or clean without precise and careful hand motion. Thus we need to preserve a pencil drawing. There are some of the easy and effective ways to preserve a pencil drawing you can try.

I haven’t met a medium or ink I dislike yet – if it’s being difficult I see it as a challenge. Sometimes it’s just a matter of pairing it with the right paper or substrate. (Currently destroying/experimenting 😆 with a few new journals – one maybe should have been labeled ink journal not watercolor 🤣. Watercolor puddles but the ink absorbs just right. Thinking it was heavy sealed or treated?)

Most recent favorite technical drawing pens: Super black but, I also really love sketching with a nib & dip ink (usually PH Martin inda or acrylic ink) – the softer fabercastell graphatites (like a 6 or 7 B) with watercolor has been creating a nice effect, too. I like to add charcoal to overline watercolor when it’s too bright or washed out. (Love the grundge feel of it sometimes – like for a rain scene).

Watercolor: Daniel smith is obvious but, I also like Turner, Holbien, Da Vinci, Van Gough, & Mission Gold (Warning: the Mission Golds WILL stain your brushes but, oooo the rich color)

    I also do Gouache & other Mediums & drawing pencil/pens. 😉

I have several brands of watercolors and I love them all, you might call me a watercolor hoarder…lol.  Some have one or two colors I may like more then the other brands but I really love them all.  W&N, Holbein, Mission, QOR, M.Graham.  I am partial to W&N’s French Ultra Marine.

My favorite brush’s are Escoda Reserva, I only have a couple small ones as they are so expensive.  Princeton Aqua Elite & da Vinci Watercolor Series 5580 CosmoTop are some of the brushes I use.

Rembrandt soft pastels, Turquoise graphite pencils & Charcoal are some other items I use.

Paper- Arches, W&N, Lanaquarelle.. Cold press 140 lb

Love everything that you mentioned that I’ve tried. (Haven’t tried m. Graham), most of those brushes & only arches on the paper.

I have those Rembrant Pastels but, I haven’t tried them with my watercolors yet. Thank you for sharing this! It’s given me the idea to try it! 😀

I prefer Sakura Pigma Micron Pens more because they come in a wider range of colors and tip sizes. Another choice is the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen which has a flexible brush tip that allows you to create a variety of line widths and styles. I also choose Arches Watercolor Paper cause this is a high-quality watercolor paper that is known for its durability and ability to hold water well. And the most I l like is Princeton Neptune Synthetic Squirrel Brushes. These brushes are made with synthetic fibers that mimic the softness and absorbency of squirrel hair, making them great for watercolor painting.

I’m a huge fan of Sakura Koi watercolors and calligraphy pens – they deliver such a vibrant look! Pilot’s Metropolitan pens are great too if you’re looking for something that’s a bit more durable and produces a more subtle effect.
