ParticipantI recieved the Schmincke Akademie Christmas edition 2017 box today, and though I’d share my thoughts.
The box itself is really pretty, with a printed lid. It’s a standard box, pretty sturdy, but light metal. Nothing fancy really, except from that really nice printed lid!
The paints are gorgeous. I heard rumours that Akademie is good quality paints, and I can only agree on that. They are as good as Van Gogh, and not far from Horadams. Way better than Winsor Newton Cotman. They are really bright and pigmented, and mix well. I’ll include a random mixing sheet just to show how they look.
I bought this box from a swedish webshop (that had to specially order it from Germany) and I know it can be difficult to find Schmincke products in US. I think a few german sellers will ship overseas, as well as some eBay sellers.

ParticipantAnd I just realized, this should have been in the “art supplies reviews” section… Oh well, it seems impossible to move so I guess I gotta leave it here.

ParticipantThank you for the review – I think. I didn’t need more temptation, lol! My drool list grows and grows.

Participantgosh those are gorgeous colors, so bright and vibrant. I agree, they look as good as Van Gogh. It’s so sad that they’re not available in the US. I wish Schmincke would change their mind and offer them! I LOVE THAT TIN! I wonder, how many people would pay a little extra just for a decorative tin? I’d pay a few dollars more for SURE. Any takers???????

InactiveI probably wouldn’t pay extra even though I like the tin. I’m pretty frugal, and old habits are hard to break.

ParticipantI’m beginning to think I am a freak,I bought a set of schminke horadam watercolors and I don’t care for them I prefer other prof, watercolors that I have. Your new tin is very pretty though..
November 4, 2017 at 2:23 pm #119726Sandra Strait
ParticipantYou’re no freak, Pamela. Everyone has certain preferences and the tin just didn’t meet yours. The opinion on the colors in the latest Schmincke Horadam Limited Edition (professional) set have been pretty divided. They’re mostly opaque, granulating and colors that might not be used often. I love them because you can create very dark values, and while I love transparency, sometimes I want opaque. Others just want transparency or different colors altogether. I don’t know if this was the set you bought, but I would imagine the same thing occurs with lots of sets. It’s too bad we don’t all have a way to try out the colors in a set before buying them.

ParticipantHi Pamela, Sandra’s right. Everyone has their favorites and Schmincke isn’t yours. You should try swapping in the swap section on the left hand side, maybe you can find someone who has the kind of paints or brushes or paper that YOU like!

ParticipantPamela, I assure you you’re not a freak! Everyone is different, and Schmincke just wasn’t your cup of tea. Fortunately, today we have a lot of really good paint brands out there to choose from! 🙂
