ParticipantAs I follow-up to Jennifer’s excellent review of the Stillman & Birn Nova paper, does anyone know of any toned papers that are manufactured specifically for watercolor?

ParticipantI believe when it’s meant for watercolor, it’s called Tinted rather than Toned, but that could also be a European thing versus American. Bockingford has tinted paper available in blue, cream, eggshell, gray, and oatmeal. There is sampler pack available on Amazon. I’ve been eyeing it for a while.

ParticipantThanks, Sandra for the info. I think you’re right that it’s called tinted.

ParticipantHi Sharon, I know that Strathmore just came out with a mixed media toned paper (400 Series Toned Mixed Media), it’s 300gsm and made to work with watercolors along with all other kinds of media. The Stillman & Birn Nova is 150gsm and works well with watercolors but the strathmore would be much thicker. Worth a try! I’ve not tried it, only the thinner not for wet media toned paper from them, the mixed media wasn’t out until just after I contacted them for samples.

ParticipantHmmm. Too bad it isn’t one of their 500 series, which is their best paper. Still the 400 is probably going to be good.

Participantit would be nice if it was 500 but I’m hoping 400 will be awesome, mom bought me a pad, hoping I’d paint her something. She LOVES toned paper work. Hehehe. I’m being bribed!

ParticipantMaybe a map? Especially an older map, partially folded with some interesting tears along the edge.

ParticipantOoh, that’s a good idea. I’ve loved the maps done of colors for each continent. Thanks!

ParticipantHow about a telescoping eyeglass?

ParticipantOh, that would be great! Jennifer may have already done one. My memory’s like swiss cheese so I’m not sure.

ParticipantHi Pamela, I have no idea what telescoping eye glass is! I’ll have to google it! or did you mean binoculars? if so, I’ve done them, not on toned paper though. They didn’t turn out as interesting as I thought they would! I think it’s all that black!

ParticipantI suspect that Pamela means an antique style hand telescope, which were usually wood and/or brass. I think they are also called spyglasses – the type of thing Captain Jack Sparrow would use to get a better look at a ship in the distance.

ParticipantI looked it up and it’s cool, I’d have to use your suggestion and put a map underneath it. But it’s an idea.
