I won Van Gogh watercolors in Charlie’s #WWM and put them through their paces. I was shocked to see that they really are much better than normal student paints. I did this pear with them.

    Van Gogh Pear

I then did the same pear on the same paper, using the same brushes and the same colors but using professional paint (Daniel Smith, Schmincke, Winsor & Newton). I was flabbergasted just how similar the pears look! The Van Gogh set is really inexpensive, much like buying a Koi set. But you get really, really good paints. I usually NEVER endorse “student” grade anything. I believe students, even more than professional watercolorists should use high grade supplies. BUT I changed my opinion after trying the Van Gogh watercolors. these are GOOD paints. Here’s the professional grade painted pear for comparison.

Oh I know that pain!! I’ll make your pain even worse.. I heard from WetPaint, they’re doing ANOTHER 2017 “square” palette!! Since the last one sold out SO quickly, in record time, only a few months which is unheard of for them. I have the skinny about what’s gonna be in it! Comes out in October so save your pennies! I’m getting it this time as I missed th quick selling one  a few months ago! I’ll post all about it soon.

I love Van Gogh paints! Much better than most student-grade paints.

You’re so right, they’re fantastic and changed my mind about recommending any student grade products. If a beginner wants to save money, THESE are the paints to start out on.
