For our prompt of “Fruit Salad” today, I sketched a dessert glass with some fruit salad and added whipped cream. Usually this dish is an appetizer or a side salad, but a little whipped cream can make anything a dessert! Though I wouldn’t put it on just anything, of course, even though I’ve always been a fan. My birthday is on Thursday, and I’ve requested gooseberry cobbler and that will have a bit of ice cream added. I’m not having a birthday party of any kind this year, which means I won’t have to share it with anyone other than Philippe. That way, I should have dessert all the way through the weekend, which is really the best present I could hope for! And, this year, while just beginning to do a bit of spring cleaning, I found art supplies I hadn’t even tried yet! So, it was like getting some surprise gifts to enjoy during my birthday month. Today is actually my mom’s birthday, and even though I think she’d prefer a slice of pecan pie, I’m dedicating this dessert to her. Happy Birthday, Mom!
I’ve typically called my mom on the 12th, the day in between our two birthdays. Mostly because I have no idea what festivities my sister and the rest of the family have planned on the actual day. Though my mom and sister often visit around this time during the spring, my sister broke her shoulder and so the plans were postponed while she recovers. Of course, being my sister, she was bound and determined make it to All-Con in Dallas the week after the injury since she had a craft booth there. She thought about crocheting a doll with its arm in a sling, or as she thought next, “maybe it’s an arm that rips off!” My family has always been able to laugh away any and all types of calamities that occur. It really doesn’t take much to look at life’s problems and see the lurking absurdity there. Once you do, it’s impossible to take things too seriously. When my sister called to tell me about her injury, which involved tripping over a dog, we both ended up in tears, but only because we were laughing so hard.
That’s why I’ve had so much fun on my own journey. I’ve never expected it to be anything in particular, I’ve just tried everything I could and chuckled through every outcome. Even moments of extreme sadness never seem to last for very long. Just by having a conversation with a family member or a close friend, I’m immediately reminded of all the good things that life has to offer. And, I’ll always find a way to see the humor in it all. I’m proud of all the stuff I’ve done, and still hopeful about all the stuff I’m only dreaming about doing next. I can’t be sure how much longer I’ll be around, but I’m going to make the most of every day. That same “DO” attitude started this very site and spawned a bunch of other fun ideas in the process. And, there’s always more to come! Even if life sometimes feels like a random jumble of moments, there’s always something fun to add on top that makes it more interesting, like whipped cream on a fruit salad.

Adorable!!!! I love DOODLEWASH!!!
Aww thanks so much, Peggy! 😃💕
Charlie I had trouble doing this comment, the notify me part got all scrambled. And I had to delete the comment.
Anyway happy happy birthday and have some red wine and dark chocolate. Lindt’s chili chocolate is my go to. Give Phillippe some too. Never mind, Philippe, just have some. Sorry I can’t spell your name right.
Your sister sounds like me. The other day I slammed my face into the cabinet door I forgot to close and have a red mark by my nose. Tomorrow when I go to get the last of the cataracts out they will want to know who hit me. I will make up a story about a masked gunman whom I sent over the balcony. Or maybe a psycho came in. Or a giant mouse.
Have fun. I do. We stay young that way.
Hugs and cheers.
Thanks so much, Linda! 😃💕 Glad the comment made it through! And the second spelling of Philippe’s name was right! hehe… I giggle because it took me months to remember whether it was a double “l” double “p” or both! lol Sorry to hear about your nose, but if we’re creating stories… I’m rather partial to the giant mouse idea! hehe Much love to you! ❤️
Happy birthday to you and to your Mom, Charlie!!! Laughter always helps!!
Thanks so much, Mary! 😃💕 Indeed! Laughter is the best present we could ever get!
Studies have shown that faking a smile can lift your mood. Fake it til you make it — one of the great truths of our time!
So true! 😃💕 Story of my art journey as well. I don’t know if I’ll ever “make it”, but it’s sooo much fun to fake it! lol
Happy (almost) birthday, Charlie!
Fruit salad is good at any time, but whipped cream (and laughter) ramps it way up! How exciting to have found art supplies! I love found gifts that we had no idea existed. Curious to see what you’ll create with them.
Thanks so much, Fanna! 😃💕 Yeah, it was so fun to find them. Now, I just have to find the time to use them… hehe… thankfully I’ve set aside extra time in July to create for World Watercolor Month so that should do the trick!
Beautiful fruit salad. Have a great birthday, Charlie.
Thanks so much, Gary! 😃💕
My sweet friend, Charlie! Happy early Birthday! Don’t sweat 52…I’m 53. It’s okay. It’s just a number! 💜
Now, you know my journey and the pain it has brought. I have been sad many days. I have. I have cried many, many tears…….but I just had to laugh when my eye doctor said that I had dry eye. I guess I DID cry my eyes out! 😂😂😂
I have always been kind of a klutz and always find these mysterious bruises everywhere and no clue how they got there. Story of my life. As angry as this journey has made me on certain occasions, I have taken to laughing at the stupid things that have come about. One night, somehow, I slid right into a corner table in the living room. I went face first and I mean ALL of me fell forward. I knocked all kinds of crap over and onto the floor. After some WTF, I began to laugh. No one was around, but it just seemed so funny. So absurd as you said. It was just so funny. 😂😂😂
Charlie, I will message you my birthday message and well wishes on Thursday, but never, never doubt that you are loved. We’ve never met, but you are special to me…..and so many others. 💜
Hola, mi amiga! Thanks so much! 😃💕 That IS funny… I didn’t know you could actually cry your eyes out! I think lived can only be lived with a healthy dose of seeing the absurdity. It’s all kind of WTF, right? Might as well laugh as much as we can along the way!! Never… stop… laughing… at life! Much love to you my friend!! ❤️
Happy Birthday to a man who always makes us smile with his beautiful/whimsical art and real stories. Hugs!
Aww what a sweet thing to say. Thank you so much, Carly! 😃💕
Very vibrant! Looks tasty.
Thanks so much, Kim! 😃💕
Love your fruit salad and the story.
Thanks so much, Angela! 😃💕
Hello hello Charlie,
What a delicious fruit salad that is! And what a wonderful post🙂 Like you, my Dad also always taught us to look at everything through a comic lens. He always says ‘no matter what it is, something about it will make you chuckle in the future’ – and it’s true!! So keep laughing Charlie… coz you’re gonna be around for a very long time. We still have to meet one day and enjoy some adventures. Have a beautiful birthday and gorgeous year ahead. Oh! And belated Happy Birthday to your Mom, and ‘Get Well Soon’ for your sister.🥰
Love,
Mugdha
Thanks so much, Mugdha! 😃💕 We definitely need to meet one day, so I’ll definitely stick around for that. Yeah, laughing is definitely the best way to get through life. Life should be fun… otherwise, there’s very little point to it. Much love to you my friend! ❤️
Happy birthday! TOTALLY with you on the gooseberry cobbler, it’s the best!!!
Thanks so much, Denise! 😃💕 Yay! Someone who appreciates gooseberry cobbler!! That’s awesome!!
