Written by Giraffes are pretty awesome and so when a prompt of “pattern” came up, they were the first thing that came to my mind. I’m pretty sure when I created this prompt I was thinking about making a watercolor pattern of some sort, perhaps something fetching that would look good on a tote bag. But alas, I was distracted by a funny giraffe face. I’ve no idea what he’s thinking about, but I love the goofy smug expression and think it’s a good one to adopt if you find yourself in a conversation you’d rather not be in. I love watching giraffes at the zoo, eating leaves with their impossibly long tongue and coming toward you with a look that implies friendly curiosity with a bit of judging. Sort of like how my dog looks at me most of time. It’s endearing when it’s an animal and I’m jealous they get to make faces that if we made them would most likely piss someone off. It would be fun to be an animal for a day and make all the faces we wanted without having to worry about offending someone.
I have to admit that when I’m in conversations, my face often betrays me. I try to keep a look that appears happy and neutral, but the second someone says something that feels a bit off my faces show them. I wish my face and I could come to some sort of agreement to stop doing that as it can often makes things awkward. Usually, it’s in a meeting when someone says something that’s so bizarrely off topic or profoundly stupid that my eyebrows raise a bit before I can stop them. I really don’t mean to be rude, I just get a physical reaction to things sometimes and my face is the first to reveal it. I’ve often try to adopt the most neutral look and freeze it there throughout the conversation, but it ends up looking more like I’ve just had a stroke and causes even more concern. Often, instead, I just opt for nodding a lot and smiling as those everything that’s said is the most amazing idea that I’ve ever heard.
I know this is a bit deceitful, but I really don’t intead to be a jerk. My face just chooses to telegraph whatever it is I’m thinking as soon as I’m thinking it. I’ve seen people in meetings who seem to adopt a perfect “meeting face” that’s a bit like a “poker face” only without any real reward in the end. I’m immediately impressed by this, but then begin to wonder if the face is there because they’re not really thinking anything at all. My mind can’t shut off and is constantly spinning through different ideas, even while I’m dreaming. Although I can’t quite mask the thoughts that are there, I’m thoroughly glad to always have them spinning there. It’s a wonderful thing to always have ideas in your head. They’re good company. Not everyone around may appreciate them, but they’re still pretty amazing. And if you find yourself spinning with thought while talking to someone, rather than let your face betray you, you could simply try to adopt your best funny giraffe face.

Lol, my ex wife used to say I looked pissed off when I was driving. I would tell her it’s just my driving face, I was just concentrating on the road I guess! I really wasn’t pissed off!

I love your giraffe! He seems to be confounded by yet another ridiculous human antic – just when he thought he’d seen them all. I can relate to many of the feelings you’ve written about in this post.

That giraffe ought to be the CEO for some big company – he looks like he could eat you alive even though I know he – or she – is vegetarian. I can’t hide my feelings either, I’m always betrayed by my intuitive response which is often to be absolutely aghast at the folks around me. Your portrait of the giraffe is wonderful – I think you should hang it in the board room at your office…Stop making that face at me, Charlie.

Your giraffe face is marvelous! You’ve captured their expression quite well. However, while it would be wonderful if we didn’t have to worry about the expression on our face, I’m not sure I’d want to have this particular expression on mine, lol.
