#doodlewashsep2022 day 28 history; The Flavian amphitheater in Pozzuoli, Italy (just outside Naples is the 3rd largest arena in Italy, although it is little known compared with the colosseum in Rome.
The arena can hold up to 50,000 spectators. The interior is mostly intact and one can still see parts of gears, which were used to lift cages up to the arena floor. In 305, the arena was the setting for the persecutions of the patron saint of Pozzuoli, Saint Proculus, and the patron saint of Naples, Saint Januarius. After surviving being thrown to the wild beasts in the arena, the two were beheaded at the nearby Solfatara. some years ago we lived near this arena and were able to wander at will among the historical ruins.
Doodlewash Prompt # 28 Historic: Saint Maurice (Watercolour on paper, 9 x 12 inches)
2022-09-28__The painting is inspired by the oldest surviving image that depicts Saint Maurice as a black African in knight\'s armor that was sculpted in mid-13th century for Magdeburg Cathedral; there it is displayed next to the grave of Otto I, Holy Roman Emperor. Saint Maurice (also Moritz, Morris, or Mauritius; Coptic: Ⲁⲃⲃⲁ Ⲙⲱⲣⲓⲥ) was an Egyptian military leader who headed the legendary Theban Legion of Rome in the 3rd century, and is one of the favorite and most widely venerated saints of that martyred group. #doodlewashSeptember2022 #outsiderartists #naivepainting #selftaughtartist #outsiderart 20220928-Historic_St_Maurice

Did you know that Xoloitzcuintli (show-low-eetz-KWEENT-lee), also call the Xolo or Mexican Hairless, is believed to be the oldest dog breed in the Americas? Archaeological findings indicate they\'ve been around for about 3,000 years.

2022-09-27 Hawthorn Provides a Feast (Watercolour on paper, 10 x 7 inches): Today\'s painting and poem for \"Art As Spiritual Practice\" was inspired by a quote from Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass, on \'the grammar of animacy\" and based on photo by Larry Kirtley (naturecanada.ca). A Washington Hawthorn (Crataegus phaenopyrum) resides in my front yard and produces small red berry-like fruit that grow closely together in large clusters providing food for squirrels and birds. The pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) is a large, mostly black woodpecker native to North America. It is the largest extant woodpecker species in North America #outsiderartists #naivepainting #selftaughtartist #outsiderart
