Welcome to a brand new month here on Doodlewash and that always marks the start of a new art challenge and adventure! This month, we’re paying homage to all of the actual celebration days in the month of September. So, we’re kicking things off with Ginger Cat Appreciation Day! Yep, this wonderfully specific day is celebrated on September 1st each year by those who love ginger cats, sometimes referred to as orange cats. Though I find it tough to tell the gender of a cat, with these cats, if you guess male you’re most likely to be correct as there are about 3 males for every 1 female ginger cat. A trick of chromosomes that I won’t go into here, because I’m not entirely sure I understand it properly. Science was never really my thing. And as many of you know, I’m allergic to cats, but if I could have one, I think I might love a ginger one best. They’re lovely little creatures. And if you do have one of these fur babies, even if it’s one of a different color, it’s still a great day to spend a little extra quality time with the cat or cats in your life. And be sure to give them a hug from me!

Out of the corner of my eye, I can currently see my dog enjoying a new little bed that Philippe bought for him recently. He’s a bit fussy, so we weren’t sure if he would take to it, but he adores it and has spent most of the day there. I can now hear him snoring. I’m actually a bit envious as it’s soft and looks amazingly comfortable, but one in my size would simply look ridiculous. He’s a brindle basenji which means he’s a bit stripey, but the primary color is actually a touch ginger in the sunlight and he has a personality that’s often like a cat. So, I think he deserves a little extra treat of some kind today in celebration of Ginger Cat Appreciation Day. I’ll be sure to let him know whenever he decides to wake up and we have a little party. I adore these celebration days because they’re often wonderful reminders to pause and appreciate the simple things in life. This is something we often do for the big holidays, when we come together as a family. But I truly believe each and every day deserves to be celebrated in some way.

Back when I very first started doodlewashing, I challenged myself to paint and celebrate days like this all month long and it was really fun! It’s also the first episode of my Sketching Stuff podcast. And if you haven’t heard yet, Episode 5 is out now and all about our furry friends, which is timely for today’s celebration. Would love to hear your comments and reactions if you have a moment to listen! I keep right on making these little podcast episodes, hoping people continue to find them enjoyable, so your comments are helpful and always much appreciated! It’s been quite a journey since I first began and, after over 1,155 consecutive days of doodlewashing, I’m still thoroughly enjoying it. It’s just incredibly fun to sketch and paint every single day, so I hope you’ll all join me. And this month will prove there’s literally something happening each day that one can celebrate with a little sketching. Whether it’s your dreams, your family, or even chocolate milkshakes, these are the best bits of life and deserve a little recognition. So, I wish you all a very happy Ginger Cat Appreciation Day!

  1. 1155 Wow!! Congrats. You deserve to celebrate! What a cute kitten. I have always adored striped kittens and as much as I love the ginger colored ones I also
love the grey tabbies with the blue eyes. Your dog is certainly a lucky pup to have both of you for his caretakers.

    1. Thanks, June! 😃💕 yeah, I can safely say my watercolor sketching and writing is an addiction. Can’t stop! And yay for the grey tabbies… they’re so cute as well! Yes, Phineas is definitely spoiled for sure! 😉

  2. Wow, Charlie! What an accomplishment! Congratulations. You’re a perfect example of nurturing a tiny acorn into a mighty oak. As to the painting, it’s so very sweet. I’m a massive cat fan and have two, one of whom is ginger. I didn’t know it was a special day for him. I’d go tell him I appreciate him right now but you know cats: he already assumes everyone appreciates him.

  3. Wonderful little ginger cat! Painting even a little painting each day is pure joy..Since starting to follow the Doodlewash prompts I’ve done a painting a day…29 days to reach my 365 day goal. Have loved every minute…thank you and all the Doodlewash folks for the inspiration and encouragement!

    1. YAY!!!! hehe… I’m so happy to hear that Mary!! I wasn’t sure, but thought you must be coming up on a year soon. Turns out, we can celebrate later this month!! That’s so fantastic. I’m thrilled to hear it! 😃💕 P.S…. don’t stop though. 😉

  4. I never met a ginger cat that wasn’t a sweetie. My ginger, Munster, loved everyone and everything except other cats, who he would attack on sight. When he was bitten on the head, the vet couldn’t listen to his heart because he was purring so loud. He’d also go for walks with my basset hound and me. As Phineas has many cat qualities, Munster was much like a dog.

  5. I love that little ginger cat!
…especially how you show the soft pink pad of her paw
and make it look soft and real. You are so good with eyes. The
eyes of this kitten catch my heart. She (when I was little I thought
all cats were girls and all dogs were boys) looks both curious and
timid and ever so lovable. Happy special day to you and your family.
    May it be labor free!

  6. You know Charlie, I enjoy your site so very much. I haven’t fully taken advantage of what you have to offer, paint wise, but you always have something nice and cheerful going on which makes your site such a pleasure to read.
