Based on a photo by Mary Lou McCambridge, it reminded me of my mom telling me about eating these at Carpenteria Beach — rolling them in the sand to get the prickles off. https://dkatiepowellart.me/2017/09/20/hahnemuhle-post-cards-not-12-prickley-pear/

Today is the last day to sketch and paint one thing that captures your interest. I would love to see your artworks and share your stories with others. Enjoy #rekindlememories !

Day 58: We had two servings of everything (which was unlimited), except for the fish and the potato ball (not drawn). It was deliciously flavorful and filling. I think my stomach was about to burst! Can you guess what cuisine is this?

With all the squirrels now busily hiding acorns I was thinking of my sister in Florida who loves stringing popcorn for the birds……just doesn\’t always work out that way. 😁

Day 57: I think I would never have sketched this architecture if I were just on my own. Having another artist with me really made the experience worthwhile. Veronica (@sharenasol_sketches), an artist from Bulgaria, was a student of mine in the Sketch Your Life online class. I was thrilled to meet her, and we exchanged stories and savoured the…[Read more]

Day 54: Have you ever wondered why dragon fruit is called as such? Is it because it’s the favorite fruit of the dragon? LOL! Kidding aside, I found that apparently, dragon fruit got its name because its skin resembles the scales of a mythical dragon. Cool right? It’s one of my favorite fruit because it’s so delicious and good!

    • This is gorgeous, Elisa! I love the way you handled the colors! 😍

    • Yes it is a delicious fruit! I actually painted with the juice just right after I did cut open the fruit, it has a wonderful color rich in pigments! I loved it! <3

    • great looking dragon fruit Elisa! It’s on my list to paint when I built up the confidence, lol. I think you handled it the best way, loose and colorful!

Day 53: It’s funny how we often complain that we don’t have time, not knowing that there is so much that we can do in a span of 5 to 10 minutes. We underestimate the advantage of a few minutes thinking it is too short of a time. So we spend it surfing social media, people watching or staring into space while waiting for our turn in the grocery,…[Read more]

    • You are so right. All my painting is done in snatches of a few minutes here and there. What you can accomplish in small bits of time is astounding.

      • Thank you for sharing your insight, Paula! I so agree and it still amazes me. Sometimes I underestimate the power of small chunks of time and overthink too much when I should be starting!

    • Cheers to that!! There’s always a little bit of time in the day to sketch!! (and this is gorgeous by the way!)

I love the idea for this group. I find sketching memories (or current event that become memories) fun and my husband loves going through the sketchbooks later. One of our favorite stores moved, and this is from the early days, and it was a place of joy in some hard times.…[Read more]

An anniversary art project: To celebrate our 30th-wedding anniversary this month, my husband, John Sutton and I did something special each day.
It could be as simple and spontaneous as lighting a candle on our dinner table, but it’s always with the intention of expressing gratitude for each other.

Day 47: I see cows almost everywhere in Switzerland. We were standing beneath the Staubbach Falls and found these guys happily chewing on fresh damp grass. I did a very quick sketch because they kept moving about as they munch. Frankly, I always feel excited to see them. I wonder if they feel the same way?

    • Lovely! It brought back a memory I had of my time in Switzerland. At night, all the cow bells echoed through the valley as they wandered on their way back to their barns. I will never forget that sound.

      • I can still remember the distant sound of cow bells…it brings my senses to life as I look around and hoping I can have a glimpse of them. Thanks for sharing, EK! 🙂

  • I tend to paint at home and only sketch on location, but I ran across an image I made when I very first started painting back in 2015. I had just gotten a new job and was sitting by myself having lunch outside at a tiny cafe nearby. I just sketched what I saw in front of me, and made what you see here, a building called The Bauer across the…[Read more]

    • Charlie, that is so awesome! You must be thrilled! Like you, I mostly sketch on location and paint from home. Sometimes when I have more time, I would paint on the spot as well. I love the bright colors on your buildings. I also enjoyed the variation of ink strokes on your sketch which made it interesting. Thank you for sharing your wonderful…[Read more]

      • Aww thanks so much!! This was a really wonky sketch looking back at it. I kind of like the crazy lines. As I’ve gotten better, my lines got a little cleaner, but I like the roughness of the early stuff! hehe

I’ve been painting and blogging about memories a lot as I’ve been gifting things to nieces and nephews. This is a memory of my grandparents ranch.
