GUEST ARTIST: “Expressing My Feelings With Watercolor” by Wang Zhenwei

My name is Wang Zhenwei, and you can also call me by my English name Davidking. I am from China and I am currently living in Beijing. I like all beautiful things, and I prefer to express my own feelings with watercolor.

Formal contacts when I was a child is very like painting, high school basic art training, but in university, I tested the college of animation and drawing, which are also related. I was glad, before graduation to participate in the background of a cartoon drawing work. What the teacher taught us was to draw the computer animation background.

More than a year after graduation, I engaged in animation background for pure hand-painted paper drawings, using gouache, for its impact on water.

At ordinary times, much of my watercolor practice is subjects from the world around me, although I do a lot of subjective processing, including the color and composition, and of course, there are some products entirely of my own creation.

I am currently engaged in the work of original painting design, with my background in design and drawing of the computer hand-painted boards.

Most of the work I do is partial design, such as the design of the atmosphere, the geomorphology, architecture, vegetation, small objects and so on.

In my spare time, I like to draw pictures by hand, which is a relaxing and enjoyable process for me.

I came into contact with watercolor in March 2017, and by the end of the year, I found that I had painted more than 200 watercolor works and practiced, and found that I was really addicted to watercolor.

In fact, I had painted before, as a young oil painter.

The oil painting medium is relatively troublesome, so watercolor has become my most devoted painting medium.

In August 2017, I went along with Joseph Zbukvic to study a short course with him. Before that, I had copied some of his works for practice, which I showed him before the commencement of the course. He said he liked them very much, and this also gave me great encouragement.

I also gained a lot in the course, and became obsessed with watercolor.

Here are some of the happy moments during the study period.

At weekends, I often like to go out sketching. I am a hand-painted person, so even during my normal working hours, I will take a lunch break and go off to draw watercolors.

About My Painting Tools

In my small studio, I frequently use a tool rack. On top, there’s a paint box, wash brush pot, absorbent cloth, small watering can, and the commonly used pen and so on. On the second level, I like to put some tubes of paint and other tools can be placed on the bottom shelf.

It’s very convenient.

I often use the pen, one should be familiar with it, of course. I also like to use some Chinese brushes sometimes to draw. Sometimes also a both at the same time in mixed use.

The watercolor paints I use are Daniel Smith and Holbein. And my paper of choice is Arches or Waterford 300g rough.

Looking Ahead

This year, I have a piece of my work on display in Italy’s Fabriano watercolor festival. I am very happy.

Painting is my favorite, so I think I can do it all my life.
