GUEST ARTIST: “A Painting Journey” by Ros Jenke

Hi, I’m Ros Jenke from the south west corner of Australia. I’ve been dabbling in some form of art most of my life. I initially trained in architectural drafting and worked in landscape drafting for several years.  When my children were young I took up decorative painting with acrylics and subsequently went on to teach and publish two books on the techniques.

After taking early retirement and relocating to the south coast I found I was isolated from and missed my network of art buddies so I joined the Wetcanvas online community. I learnt a lot from tutorials and links on that site and developed an interest in other forms of art, mainly watermedia, pastels and gouache.

Doodlewash by Ros JenkeMy first tutorial there was with Larry Seiler and he stated that it takes 120 bad paintings to know something about painting and encouraged participants to start their own blog (you can visit mine here!) to keep a personal record of their progress. Happily I’m well past the 120 mark and I think I know a little bit more about painting now : ) Since then I have been a regular on the Wetcanvas Weekend Drawing Event 2 hour challenge, where a different host posts 16 reference photos to choose from each week. I like this motivation because I am a little lazy I guess and it makes it easy to choose one of those.

More recently I enrolled in Liz Steele’s Sketching Foundations course and discovered a love of sketching and the start of the obsession with pens and watercolours. Liz encouraged students to post their work on Flickr, so I started my own page which you can view here

Doodlewash by Ros JenkeI then discovered the Every Day in May, then June Facebook art groups and started a daily art habit, but lapsed a little after a few months. This post for the prompt “in the can” on my Flickr page was picked up on Explore (who knows why?) and got over 90 faves and 10,000 views. I then enrolled in some Craftsy courses, my favourites being Shari Blaukopf’s Watercolour landscapes and Marc Taro’s Travel sketching.

Doodlewash by Ros JenkeA few months ago I decided to keep a diary/journal and do a little sketch or painting each day and since then I am much more committed. I post my daily diary entry on Instagram and a weekly wrap up on my blog.

Doodlewash by Ros JenkeMy daily paintings are mainly gouache because my journal has difficult paper but it it also makes me experiment with ways to overcome the problem. I like to make my art fun and light hearted and I try to include a fitting quote or to add a little humour.

Doodlewash by Ros JenkeThanks Charlie for inviting me. I love sharing and interacting with others online in painting and sketching communities.
