Written by These lovely doodlewashes come to us from Salomé Blain in Lyon, France (follow her on Instagram and Facebook!). She is currently in Amsterdam until the end of the year and is doing neurocognitive research and is affiliated with the ENSL (Normal Superior School of Lyon).
“I have been drawing more realistic stuff for half a year,” she says, “and I started to use watercolor 2 months ago. Although everybody around me was telling me that I don’t use watercolor as I should, I like very much how easy it is to change and mix colors with it.”
This month, she started a series of drawings of different kinds of trees, since she is a biologist and realized there were plenty of trees she couldn’t recognize. Salomé says, “I figured, hey, let’s mix drawing and working. That’s gonna be fuuuuun!”
So she found a nice website in which there are explanations helping to recognize various trees. Also she tries to draw them from real leaves when she can find some, or from different mixed photographs when she can’t find the actual leaves to sketch.
She uses very thin pens for the lines, either Uni Pin Fineline pens or Staedtler pigment liners, from 0.05 to 0.3. For the watercolor, she has a special nylon paintbrush with a water refill, and finds it really handy and easy to work with anywhere, without any need for a glass of water.
“I like to catch spaces and places I know or I don’t know,” she says. “It makes me realize more details about what I see. And this month, I had the chance to be asked to be a guest on doodlewash.com, and also to be featured in an art festival in Honfleur (Normandy, France), so I am pretty excited about this!”

Beautiful! And it reminded me of my grandmother’s (1902-2005) watercolors . She went to botanical school and did her plant studies in watercolors 🙂

It’s a great way to learn plants, and I should really try it! My older son just picked up a book, read it, and now knows more trees and about trees than the dendrologist in hubby’s department. Me, I have no memory (waaaah…old age), so engaging my whole brain by reading, looking, and drawing would be beneficial. Following her on Instagram!
