GUEST ARTIST: “Animal Fun” by Kathrin Werner

I am Kathrin Werner from Stuttgart, Germany. I have always enjoyed drawing, but in the last years I am getting more and more addicted to it. I am interested in animals – imaginary and real ones. I use different kind of media (colored pencils, acrylics, oil pastels), but also watercolors, which I love but still sometimes find hard to master.

In autumn of 2014, I did a challenge to draw a bird daily for 101 days (together with Jill Kuhn and Corinne Bekker, both of them have had guest doodlewashes here as well). That was a wonderful and inspiring experience with the two of them. Obviously, I learned a lot about birds anatomy and different media, but also a lot about just creating on a regular basis.

Doodlewash by Kathrin WernerIn 2015, I decided to draw another series of birds just using a drawing pen – a tool I felt I could not handle so far – and watercolors. The first few were stiff and horrible, but I started to like the ink pen. Suddenly some fun birds with hats and shoes appeared and the birds started doing strange things. I discovered that I really like to draw fun stuff like the mice juggling on a giraffe’s head.

Doodlewash by Kathrin WernerI also started writing some words with it. Last summer I thought of doing some drawings “with birds and reptiles”. “Evolution” was the first one. Out of these drawings a story about an open minded crocodile named Benni was evolving in loose episodes– this time with colored pencils.

Doodlewash by Kathrin WernerI really enjoy it if I get an idea for something funny and can bring it onto paper. It often works for me to just start scribbling some birds, creatures or even objects and suddenly something emerges to work with. Also just making colored marks on the paper and see if I can discover something is a great technique (learned in a online class by Carla Sonheim).

And my kids are a source of inspiration, too. Sometimes I have no ideas at all, but I have learned to write or sketch good ideas down as soon as possible. So I have something to rely on to get over those periods. I always have a sketchbook with me to draw from life when there is some time and I decided to draw something every day in 2016.

Doodlewash by Kathrin WernerI could not have predicted a few years ago the way which my drawings (and paintings) evolved and it wasn’t my intention to draw the fun stuff, I just realized I had fun doing it. So it feels sometimes of being on an adventurous creative journey where I don’t really know what comes next – so that is pretty much exciting for myself.
