Written by These phenomenal doodlewashes come to us from Moy Medrano in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico (follow him on Instagram!). He’s 28 years old and has a Masters in international administration. He says, “I like to exercise, read, paint (obviously) and appreciate art, all kinds of art.”
Moy says, “I had never painted before, knew nothing about painting and art (just the basics), but I always found it very interesting. When I started to mature, I was very interested in Leonardo Da Vinci. It made me very curious, but I still did not know anything.”
In October 2012, at the age of 25, Moy’s younger brother bought a kit of watercolors for one of his classes (he studies architecture). “On a day of curiosity, I tried the colors,” he says. “I made a fish and began to draw, then took watercolors and painted. At first I was not good and I did not like the result.”
Soon his brother came and said, “Hey, watercolors are not used like this, you must put more water and let the color flow.” Moy tried it and when he saw the result he says, “I was stunned, I could not believe how beautiful watercolor was and then I soon began to draw and paint what I liked best.”
After that, and thanks to his brother, he would be taught painting by his teacher, Huascar Taborga. Moy says, “He’s Bolivian, and a philosopher. He’s such a great person and a master of watercolor, admired and loved by the community of painters. He received me in his study and he soon helped me expand my potential.”
Moy remembers well when they first met. He brought his earlier paintings in to show Huascar and he told him, with his Bolivian accent, “brother, you’ve already painted or studied painting before?” and Moy said “No, sir.” To this Huascar replied, “I’ll help you to be one of the best watercolorists.”
Unfortunately his life is filled with work and he has little time for painting. He’s currently doing a portrait of Lucian Freud in watercolor to compete in an upcoming national watercolor contest, which will be at the “National Museum of Watercolor Alfredo Guati Red” in the city of Mexico. He’s hopeful to win first prize.
Moy starts his creative process simply by seeing art by other artists or occasionally seeing photos with beautiful and artistic themes. He says this “makes me want to translate them into a drawing and painting and I simply do. Sometimes I like to draw faces because I think the look of a person says a lot.”
He uses Winsor & Newton watercolors for his sketches and for his major works Sennelier. For his paper he almost always uses Arches. There are many artists he likes and where he turns to find inspiration: Leonardo da Vinci, Sergent Ogden Pleissner, Andrew Wyeth, Ricardo Perez Alcala, Sorolla, Freud, and Soutine. And he’s also inspired by contemporary artists such as Casey Baugh.
Moy says, “I love the art of Elly Smallwood, Guy Denning, Bruno Monteiro, Julia Barminova, Evaristo Callo Anco, Sam Wolfe, Galina Ershova and, of course, my teacher Huascar Taborga.”

you saying ALL those pictures are water colors? even the “shirtless man” one? oh I do so love art. And when I see the work of “average people” I sit in shock. Understand they’re not “average” when it comes to ability. And Moy is definitely not average – a Master’s degree at 28. And then he picks up a brush and POOF. An artist. So great!!
