GUEST ARTIST: “Cikini’s Street” by Sari Atika Sundari

This fantastic doodlewash comes to us from Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, by the incredibly talented Sari Atika Sundari. She’s a self-taught 26-year-old sketcher and watercolorist who usually draws plein air on Sunday mornings with her fellow sketchers. She’s a member of KOLCAI (Indonesia Watercolor Community ) and Indonesia’s Sketchers (The Indonesian Urban Sketchers group in Jakarta).

This doodlewash is of Cikini’s Street sketched from a 2nd floor view near Menteng Huis mall.  It was created on Daler-Rowney, 300 gsm, size A3, smooth hot press watercolor paper. She started with a 2B mechanical pencil to create the initial sketch and then used Van Gogh watercolor paint to add the washes of color (she says she prefers Van Gogh paints because of the good pigments they produce). Lastly, she goes back in to add lines with her Pilot fountain pen. What I love is that she just uses enough ink to add details, but doesn’t add back in all the lines – just enough to create interest and dimension in the foreground while letting the pure watercolor produce the distant buildings and trees.  As she says, “I just feel what I sketch.”

Art has always been her passion since she was very young. Becoming a sketcher and watercolorist has made her very happy in her life. In her words “I like painting and sketching what I see…everything I try to sketch. The lines and colors make me think, ‘yes, i want people who will see my art and be happy.’

I think we can all agree that her art makes us very, very happy indeed! Can’t wait to see more wonderful doodlewashes from Sari Atika Sundari!
