Luis says, “Painting was always my biggest hobby, but when I was 10 years old I started on my art classes, where I figured out that I was really interested in arts. That was because I met my first art teacher, Such an inspiring woman, she motivated me to the edge and taught me almost everything I know.”
Luis is now 24, and he’s on his third year studying art as his university. He says he finds it really necessary to choose the best guide when learning art, because there isn’t anything more satisfying than finding someone who loves teaching.
He typically uses acrylics, graphite and charcoal, but this October brought a change. He and many of his classmates decided to participate in the #INKtober challenge. At the beginning of the month, his artwork was based only on lines, pens and ink but, “that is so boring”, he thought.
“Then I found my watercolour case,” he says, “hidden by me many months ago. It was initially a technique that I really hated because of the difficulty of blending and waiting for layers to dry before painting the next one. After many paintings I feel very proud of my improvements. Ironically, thanks to #INKtober, I started to improve my watercolour painting.”
Luis also uses oil, pastels and colour pencil. “I sketch and doodle most of the time (books, newspaper, sheets.. ) When I draw it’s like throwing up everything out of my mind, that’s why I never show everything I draw! Actually, I was more able to express my emotions in my paintings when I was a child. Now I think I lost a little bit of that capability, which is quite sad to me! But I’m trying to get that back.”
Though Luis says he’s less comfortable in watercolor (acrylics and charcoal are his preferred mediums), he thinks it’s never too late to try new ways of making art. “When something is hard to me, I try as many times as I need to get better,” he says. “I found this a way of life, a way to express, a way to show the world what’s on my mind, my obsessions.”
