GUEST ARTIST: “Creating Joy With Watercolors” by Aubrie Heck

Hello everyone! My name is Aubrie Heck. I am fifteen years old and I live in the suburbs of Kansas City with my parents, younger sister, and two cats.

Balancing time between being in high school, participating in sports, and taking music lessons, it can be difficult to carve out time for drawing and painting- but it is something that I love to do and miss very much when I neglect it.

I have learned different art techniques through taking many online art classes (from Carla Sonheim, Danielle Donaldson, Lynn Whipple, etc.) and from years of practice. There has never been that single aha moment where I realized that I wanted to become an artist because I have always felt that I already am one. Like Ananda Coomaraswamy once said, “The artist is not a special kind of person; rather each person is a special kind of artist.”

My favorite materials are simple: a mechanical pencil, an ultra-fine tipped sharpie pen, and a set of Dr. Martin’s liquid watercolors. I love watercolors because they can add a whole new level of energy to your drawings without taking anything away from the original.

When I draw, I like to have a subject to look at, whether it be an object in my room, one of my cats, a person walking by, or an interesting face in a magazine. I like to draw the world with a bit of my own imagination and personality mixed in with reality. There is so much joy that comes from creating with your own hands something that you love and the joy only spreads when shared with others!

I am so excited for the opportunity to have my works displayed on Doodlewash with so many other talented and amazing artists. You can see more of my pieces on my Facebook page.

  1. Dear Aubrie, you truly are already an artist! Those drawings are outstanding! Perfect in every sense: line, color, imagination and maturity. They belong into a gallery. Absolutely fascinating!

  2. Aubrie, your work is so full of life and wonder, it’s a joy to see. I love the personality and whimsy expressed in each portrait. I hope you’ll consider entering the art field as a professional but even if you decide to pursue another career, I know you’ll be an artist all your life, creating magic from color. As you’ve said, you already are an artist. I[m going to remember your name.

  3. Aubrie, it was so much fun to see your art work. I, too, have taken Carla Sonheim’s online classes and she brings out the creativity in everyone. Keep drawing and splashing color around — your pictures are delightful!!!

  4. WOW! You are amazing – and I love your sense of spirit, play and self – your confidence and joy in what you’re doing! Never give up on the dreams – although you have so much going on in your life and world, always make a bit of time to do what you love to do – this is what will keep you real and true to who you are – an artist 🙂

Doodlewash is one of my fave sites to stop by and check out what’s happening. Charlie is so generous and his ideas have really grown these past few years into something spectacular. He regularly features guest posts – and this awesome young artist has incredible energy in her pieces! Sometimes, you just need to stop by, take a few minutes, and appreciate gems for their beauty 🙂

  6. Amazing amazing work!!!
Wow so creative and so different from what we get to see normally ❤️
You’re doing great at such a young age that i wonder what better things you’d be doing when you grow up.
