This beautiful doodlewash comes to us from Susan Carver Williams in East Tennessee. After years of expressing her creative streak through writing and photography, Susan rediscovered her inner artist at the beginning of summer after a decades-long hiatus. (so glad you did Susan!) She sketches and paints every day now, sometimes obsessively, often using her own photographs as inspiration.
An artist/photographer friend urged her to join the Facebook group “Every Day in June.” She did, and kept going through July and now into August. In her words, “the theme-a-day prompts seem to be just right for me, giving me an opportunity to explore subjects and styles and learn about materials. It’s also a very supportive and engaging artistic community.”
Susan uses primarily watercolors and ultra fine Sharpie markers these days. Just recently, she discovered the freedom of using water brushes so she’s now ready to paint anytime, anywhere. (we love that!) Her Inktense watercolor pencils serve as her palette; she simply smudges the wet brush against the color and she’s set to go. She’s tried lots of subjects, thanks to the theme-a-day group.
Susan says, “landscapes and plants seem to be my favorite subjects, though the occasional whimsical animal sneaks in, and I’m also working on portraits. My appreciation for Kandinsky has been rekindled, and I sometimes import elements of his abstract style into my paintings.” Be sure to check out her Facebook page for more of her lovely work! So happy you’ve found your inner artist again, Susan. Sounds like you’re finally at home and we can’t wait to see the lovely doodlewashes you’ll create next!
