Written by Hello, I’m Ngurah Angga (my full Balinese name is I Gusti Agung Ngurah Anggawijaya) I’m 24 years old and from Bali, but currently living in Jakarta, Indonesia. Bali is a nice place to live because of its rich culture, beautiful beaches and delicious dishes. By the way, I’m so glad that Charlie featured me on his website.
I’ve been drawing since I was as young as I can remember. My Parents encouraged me and my brother in drawing and painting. Then, my brother and I started to join many local drawing or colouring competitions. At that time, I used crayon and pastel, they are really fun and easy to blend. But when I grew up, I tried to combine crayon with watercolor. Yeah, it makes good and unique combinations, as crayon (pretty much made from wax or oil) cannot blend with watercolor. And now, I use watercolor as my partner, watercolor has nice and soft texture of painting, and I love it since the first time I used watercolor. At first, watercolor is really hard to handle, the water just spilled everywhere.
Honestly, I never went to art school or another intense study of art. I just learned art from other artists out there. I love urban sketching or sketchwalk style, they are spontaneous and unpredictable. You can do urban sketching while you go on vacation. I’ve done it when I went on vacation to Thailand with my family, and it was really fun to do (you can see it on my Instagram).
I paint mostly buildings (although, I don’t have any architecture background), vehicles or stuff. One time, I painted Bank Indonesia building at Solo. That building’s architecture is influenced by European style. At first, that building was used as De Javasche Bank, then after colonial period was over, the building has been used by Bank Indonesia until now. That’s why the building has very unique European style.
Beside buildings, I painted Bajaj (shown at top of post) and other stuff. For the Bajaj, I was inspired by Indonesian famous public transportation. Bajaj is largery known as unique three wheeled transportation in Indonesia, India, Thailand and other Asian countries. In Thailand, Bajaj is called “Tuk-Tuk”. For me, painting from real objects is more challenging than painting from a photo. In real objects, we use our eye to see from our perspective. The object can easily change if we change our perspective or our point of view.
Other than that, I made some motorcycle paintings. I do love the motorcycle and the other reason is that the detail of machinery is really fun to paint. Like the color of metal, carbon, or wheels and rubber. And watercolor makes very unique textures for the color. On this project, I used wet on wet technique. I colored it part by part so the water wouldn’t mix with another part, which could make no space or differences between part and object. I used Sakura Koi Field Sketch Travel Kit, pointy brush, extra small brush for detail, and aquarelle paper.
Maybe in the future, I want to make as many painting as I can do and make a small artspace or art gallery in my hometown (that’s my dream!). And lastly, I’d like to say thank you to Doodlewash for the opportunity to be featured here!

Terrific paintings, and I love that Yamaha – especially the paint variations in the tires. I totally agree that painting from real life presents its own set of challenges, but it gets a little easier with a lot of practice. Great work!

The little orange car, or cart, whatever it is called, is so beautifully executed. I use also use watercolor with ink, but at 24 years old you have already honed your craft and perfected your style. Wonderful illustrations!
