GUEST ARTIST: “Hooked On Watercolors” by Jodi Sones

My name is Jodi Sones and I now live on the central Oregon coast, USA, in a small town called Waldport.  I was born and raised in a very small town in southern California and come from a family of artists, all on my mother’s side of the family, and they were the ones that originally influenced me the most.

They painted primarily in oils, and one did a bit of acrylics, but treated it about the same as if painting with oils since that was what they first learned.  When they went to school, art was taught to them, but that had been taken out of the subjects when I went to school.  I pretty much had to go it on my own, and really didn’t do much except some chalk drawing on a blackboard I got for Christmas one year.

As a very young child, I was taken out of kindergarten at age 5 with rheumatic fever and did not go back to school until I was 8 years old.  Evidently, I was a fast learner because it only took me one year to catch up with the kids my own age.  I didn’t know how to write my name, didn’t know the alphabet, couldn’t do math and reading was out of the question at first.

In the 1970’s, I decided to dabble a bit in watercolor, transparent oils, acrylics, pastels, charcoal, almost anything I could get my hands on.  I gave it up after only a few months and didn’t do anything for many years.

I am retired now (almost 70 years old) so decided to take it up again in 2015 and enrolled in a 6 month, on-line course from Anna Mason.  When I signed up for her class, I decided I was going to do it MY way and not invest in all the different colors of paint available.

I now paint in only watercolor and not only just watercolor, but only primary watercolors. The colors I use are Cobalt Blue, Azo Yellow and Alizarin Crimson from M. Graham. Very rarely I will use a bit of Chinese White, but try to keep that at a bare minimum as I do favor masking fluid over Chinese White.  I am considering switching the Cobalt Blue out for Turquoise and the Alizarin Crimson out for Magenta as soon as I use the tubes up that I now have.

I did purchase a few brushes for the tiny details, but was given some bamboo brushes from a friend and now paint with them.  I was given 5 brushes, but the first one I tried do everything, including the tiny details that I so love to do.

I like the details in painting botanical subjects best, but did a painting of a friends cat and now people want me to paint their pets.

  1. Three watercolor paints? Five brushes? Didn’t paint watercolor till you were nearly 70 years old? Jodi, you are my hero! Bravo to you for showing that life begins the minute you wake up each day. Your art work is gorgeous, images to linger over, and if an artist can get a viewer to gaze, well, that’s a masterful stroke. So very nice to meet you through your art.

  2. Incredible Jodi, and only using 3 colors, that’s amazing. Your paintings are so beautiful and fresh looking. I love them all, especially the boat, and the doggies. You are an inspiration to all of us. Thank you for sharing your work.

  3. Incredible…what you have accomplished with only 3 pigments! I’m sure the folks at M. Graham would joyfully find this story and your artwork astounding!
