Written by This awesome piece by Jenna Phipps, from Vancouver, British Columbia, shows how you can also create a beautiful doodlewash using only ink and water (follow her blog here!). This piece was created on 12×18 watercolor paper with India ink. Jenna is currently attending college, however, this piece was creating during AP art in high school. “This is one of my first times ever using ink in this way,” she says. “All I had was the India ink bottle, paint brush, and a jar of water and just mixed tones from there.”
Jenna is currently a Studio Art and Design major at the University of Idaho and has been creating art ever since she can remember. She says “When I first entered college I thought an art degree would get me nowhere after I graduated. Everyone was telling me I needed to do something practical and get a degree where you can get a job after graduation.”
She didn’t really want to become an Art teacher, so she thought there was no point in being an Art Major. So she instead chose Architecture, but found it to be too dull and difficult for her liking. Next she tried interior design because she figured she would at least get to play with more color, but it was still really hard and stressful.
Jenna says, “It took me awhile to really realize I can’t force myself into a degree if I am not happy doing it. I would be working in that field for the rest of my life. I needed to love it. It then hit me that Art was really my passion and I needed to stick with it. Who knows what I will end up in, but at least I will be happy!”
She really enjoy using watercolor and ink, and they are her favorite to use! “I just love the ability to blend colours so nicely,” she says, “and get such great tones you can’t get from anything else. In high school when I took AP Art, I really explored a lot with ink and ever since then, I have been hooked on that medium.”
Jenna has recently started a blog called Speak Glitter where she showcases all of her works of art. “I have been showing tips and tricks of how I personally made pieces and just my general gallery of pieces,” she says. “I wanted to keep track of my progress throughout my years in university and see how I grow through a blog.” You can also see Jenna on Instagram!

I was horse-crazy as a kid. I didn’t have a horse, wasn’t near any horses and still don’t know how to ride, lol, but I devoured books about horses. Jenna’s drawings remind me of the illustrations I’d see and try to recreate. Beautiful work.
