These beautiful and fascinating doodlewashes come to us from Gray Proud, originally from Warwickshire, England and now living in London (follow him on Instagram and visit his website for more!).
Painting is something Gray has always loved to do. Observational drawing in the natural world is often a starting point, but invariably he turns to his imagination to fill in the gaps and bring about the final stages. His affection for England and its constituent parts, its wildlife and quirks are regularly present throughout in his work.
Gray says, “I work almost exclusively in ink and watercolour now after experimenting with other mediums in the past. I find them most receptive to my instinctive technique. I tend to draw intuitively and with a free and loose style, which invites ‘happy accidents’ and original line (or at least, that’s the idea!).”
He says that somehow he’s always aiming to put his subconscious self on the page. The color follows almost immediately, and in a similar fashion to the line, he applies it through instinct, and goes with his first thought.
“Bright and colourful is often the way for me,” he says, “but it really depends on the subject. I’m also very interested in entering the children’s illustration market. I’m a firm believer that words and pictures should, and can go hand-in-hand. And these should be presented and enjoyed in the flesh, even if an increasingly digitalised world try to lead us astray!”
Be sure to follow him on Instagram as well as his Facebook Page! Thank you so much for sharing your amazing work with us, Gray! And we can’t wait to see what stories you’ll draw next!

Such a unique style. The last picture I think is inspired by an impressionist painting but with this artist’s twist. Lovely.
