Written by This is what I tell my students all the time. We can’t make our work so precious. If it doesn’t work, it’s ok. A lot of mine don’t work out! I am Suzy ‘Pal’ Powell from Plains, Texas, a town of 1500. We live in the country on the family farm. We were cotton farmers for over 40 years. We quit a couple of years ago and I sure miss it.
I have drawn and doodled and created things my entire life. I was embroidering and sewing before I ever started to school. It wasn’t until the late 80’s that I started trying to learn to paint.
I seemed to have an allergy to oils, so I started doing drawings and pastels, then in 1990, switched to watercolor. From then until 2010 I did nothing but watercolor, but now doing a lot of mixed media collages.
Where we live there’s no lessons, etc. and I never had any art in school, so I started ordering North Light art books and practicing. Now I have been in Three North Light books! What an honor. (The Incite books)
I think of myself as a nostalgic painter. I love old things, but being from Texas western art is my very favorite. I have also done a lot of American Flags, another favorite. I am a signature member of South Western watercolor Society, Wyoming watercolor Society, and Artists of Texas.
I am also crazy about sketching. I try really hard to sketch every night after supper. I paint during the day, but at night, watching the news or movie is a perfect time to draw. I love to draw and paint the everyday things.
I love to teach and share what God has blessed me with, and my philosophy is : ‘It is just paint and paper, Not a matter of Life or death, so just have fun and enjoy the process.

Thanks Max. I am speaking from experience. I used to be so stressed and realized it IS JUST paper. And paint. Nobody was gonna die or get sick. Hahah. So it helped me with my many flopped paintings.
Suzy, it’s a joy to see your art and I love your philosophy as well. I always tell kids (I was a teacher for many years) that they should save their tears for when they are really needed, and a messed up painting is not one of them. In fact, we used to make collages out of art that didn’t work out in its first life.
I dislike telling an artist my favorite of their work because I don’t want to suggest that everything else is less than wonderful – but I am totally enchanted by your painting of the jacks and ball. Such a deceptively simple design but you’ve made a gorgeous painting of this subject. I like the way the jacks are turned different directions and there are red blushes all over the paper, emphasizing the brilliant red ball. The repetition of the shadows and highlights pulls the painting together without imposing heavy bulk. Each time I look at it., another little wonder becomes evident.

Sharon thank you for your kind comments and am glad you told the kids that about their work. It takes years for us to learn and I pray I never stop learning. Also thanks for kind words about the painting itself. I loved playing jacks and I enjoyed playing with my daughter. This painting was poured. Using a lot of miskit. But so much fun to do. The background colors were an accident am sure! Thanks again. And happy painting.
