Here’s a gorgeous set of doodlewashes from previous Guest Doodlewasher Sari Atika Sundari (@sari_watercolor and @sari_atika) in Jakarta, Indonesia whose previous posts can be seen here and here. She had an art camp event recently with her community of artist friends in KOLCAI (An Indonesian watercolor painting community).
Sari says, “we held art camp in Mojokerto in East Java. I went to the location on my own by train. Later I arrived at Pacet, Mojokerto to meet all of our friends from other cities and districts… Surabaya, Bali, Bandung, Malang, Yogyakarta, and Jakarta. We have a dream and mission… to make watercolor go public in indonesia!”
Her initial thought upon arrival was “Wow” and the nature was extremely beautiful with lovely mountains, forests, and rivers. She met her best friend from Bali, master watercolorist Irwan Widjayanto, to plein air sketch together. Sari was very interested in his technique, but wanted to try the same objects from a different angle, and couldn’t stop sketching until the sun was setting.
On the first day she painted the forest and on the second day came many more subjects. She really wanted to paint the river in Mojokerto because the lack of pollution there made the water clean and beautiful. “With my lovely Van Gogh watercolor … and with my friend, we were happy… plein air sketching together, sharing, and laughing on this shiny day!”
Sari often goes direct to watercolor now without pencil. She says sometimes she needs pencil or ink. “I just feel what I want to paint and when I am painting, sometimes I feel the subject enough with only watercolor but sometimes I don’t… and I add ink.” (for example, Sari uses watercolor only for natural objects like rocks and stone shown above)
After Pacet, Mojokerto, she went to her uncle Moelyoto’s house (he is an artist too, from Bali). His home is very nice and traditional and there are flowers in the garden. Many orchids appear in the mango tree there. After her morning tea, she decides to make a painting. Sari says, “Ohhh… I love this flower so much! I have a dream that I want to go around the world painting flowers, but would need some kind of sponsor to make my dream real!”
She loves the colors and gestures of flowers and exploring their beautiful proportions. Back home in Jakarta, she painted a full flower market in Cikini. “It was a very nice moment,” she says, ” and there were even more flowers to see. It’s a very nice place. My habit in painting is that I never worry with time!”
Thanks for taking us on your journey Sari! And if you haven’t followed her original account yet (@sari_atika), or her newer Instagram account, dedicated to her watercolor paintings (@sari_watercolor), please do so!

How exotic it must be to do plein aire art in Indonesia (although I guess if you lived there, it’s just another day…LOL!)! I am too chicken to outdoor paint anywhere. I should start small like on our own property…but goodness, it’s so daunting to because the great outdoors is so…you know…great. LOL!
Haha!! All the more reason you need to DO it Teresa!! I’ll be waiting for your plein air masterpiece soon! 😉👍🏻❤️
