Old San Juan by Sofia Ingram

GUEST ARTIST: “Old San Juan” by Sofia Ingram

With today’s guest doodlewashes, we’re traveling to Old San Juan with Sofia Ingram, currently living in South Carolina and born and raised in Colombia, South America (follow her on Instagram @sofiingram). She lived in Columbia until she was thirty years old and then moved to the United States and that’s when her whole adventure in sketching began!

Sofia says, “As many other children, I had a strong interest in coloring and drawing that lasted until I was 11 years old. Later, during my college years, I sketched a few nudes and bought my first set of watercolors, a very cheap one that I was able to afford. I loved watercolors since the first try!”

After that, she had to write a thesis for two years so she stopped experimenting. After that lapse, she remembers buying her first “serious” watercolor set in Spain, at a very famous mall there (“Imagine you are walking into Macys or JCPenny and there is a corner with art supplies!”).

She later moved to Virginia and started sketching three months after getting off the plane – and hasn’t stopped since then! Sofia soon became a ‘Virginian’ at heart and fell in love with the stunning landscapes and the history of every city and town there.

“To me,” says Sofia, “sketching satisfies my urge of keeping a record, of leaving a mark, a proof of my existence. I’ve found that no fancy equipment is necessary to keep a sketchbook, and also found there is a ‘tribe’ of sketchers.” (we agree! It doesn’t take much to get started and there are wonderful tribes! From urban sketchers to your new family of doodlewashers, we’re here to support you in your journey!)

You can see more from Sofia by following her on Flickr (leonelda), Twitter (@SofiaIngram_), Facebook (e.s.sierra), and Instagram (@sofiingram)! Her sketches and doodlewashes are wonderful, and it’s a treat to see the world through her eyes, so definitely click these links to see more!

“My sketchbooks explore the curiosity of someone who sees and tries things for the first time. They are a record of my life abroad, as an immigrant, away from friends and family but full of dreams, new friends and experiences.”
