Written by These glorious doodlewashes come to us from artist Vanessa Hands d’Azevedo, in Carcavelos, Portugal (about 7.5 miles west of Lisbon). Vanessa has a gift for capturing life’s moments in a way that tell a wonderful story. For her watercolors, she uses a varied palette with a focus on structure, balance and harmony. The result is a stunning peek inside everyday life that’s filled with beauty and emotion. From the art critic Alfonso Almeida Brandão, “the artist has a large clearance in the technical aspect of treatment in terms of shapes, volumes, shadows, shades and transparencies.”
Very early in life, Vanessa began to show a talent for artistic creation. She was certainly influenced by her father, respected Portuguese painter, Rui de Azevedo, but she has now already made a name for herself in Portuguese Contemporary Watercolor.
A watercolorist of feature for Naturalist, she has also worked in the field of illustration for children’s books. Vanessa has a love for nature and animals. You’ll often find her painting in her studio surrounded by her cats and a Labrador Retriever. She says, “I also love old cities and antiques. That is where I get my inspiration.”
