Watercolor Urban Sketching by Sergei Merkulov

GUEST ARTIST: “Sketching in Sevastopol” by Sergei Merkulov

These doodlewashes are from the talented hand of Sergei Merkulov in Sevastopol, which is in the southwestern region of the Crimean Peninsula on the Black Sea. Sergei is an artist, urban sketcher and designer who enjoys making sketches of his city. (follow him on Instagram and check out his blog for more!) He says he, “most of all likes to sketch ships and the streets of Sevastopol.”

He started sketching a couple years ago, when he was inspired by the sketches of other artists. Since then, he will go outside to paint in the style of urban sketchers, but also often draws at home from photographs. He spends his days working as a designer in a local publishing house, and has previously taken drawing lessons from a Sevastopol graphic artist.

Sergei has also taken part in two sketch exhibitions, one personal and one in collaboration with fellow artistsOksana Domnina and Dasha Rybina. “For my sketches,” he says, “I use black gel pen and ordinary Russian water color (‘white nights‘). I started sketching because sketches are a simple reflection of reality and I can carry my sketchbook with me anywhere I go.”

Thanks so much for sharing your amazing doodlewashes with us, Sergei! Your work is fantastic and we can’t wait to see more! And be sure to follow him on FacebookTwitter as well as Instagram!
